Calcium silicide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula CaSi2, which belongs to metal silicide. Calcium silicide is insoluble in water, decomposes in hot water, is flammable, and may spontaneously ignite in the air. It can react violently with hydrochloric acid. Industrial products usually contain aluminum and iron impurities. It is also known as calcium disilicide, and the chemical formula is CaSi2. Calcium silicide CaSi2 powder is used in steelmaking deoxidation and special steel additives. Calcium silicide can be formed by reacting Ca metal and Si in an inert atmosphere at 850°C. It is a white or dark gray to black solid with a melting point between 700 and 935°C.

Preparation technology of Calcium silicide
1. Calcium silicide with high purity can be prepared by direct melting of elemental silicon and calcium. But the operation must be carried out in two steps. Step 1: Mix pure calcium crumbs and pure silicon powder evenly, put them in a hard plain-fired porcelain boat, quickly put the porcelain boat into a Shi Ying reaction tube, and introduce CO2 into the tube. After the porcelain boat is heated to 1000℃, it only takes a few seconds for the mixture to melt, and the reaction will proceed violently. Take out the porcelain boat, and the product CaSi will immediately coagulate and crush it. CaSi is a multi-Chemicalbook porous block, which is lead-gray and metallic. Step 2: Mix CaSi with the calculated amount of Si powder evenly, put it in a nickel boat, and heat it at 1000℃ in H2 gas flow. Because the last stage of the reaction is slow, it needs to be heated for 15 hours. 2. CaSi2 can be prepared by mixing pure CaO and silicon with proper fluxes of CaF2 and CaCl2 and melting at 1400℃ so that the prepared CaSi2 is mixed with a large amount of silicon.
