Calcium Silicide Properties
About Calcium Silicide CaSi2 Powder:
Calcium silicide, also known as calcium disilicide, is an inorganic compound, a silicide of calcium. The molecular formula of calcium silicide is CaSi2 and the molecular weight is 96.2514g/mol. Off-white or dark gray to black solid substance, melting point 1033°C. It is insoluble in water, but decomposes when it meets water, producing hydrogen and calcium hydroxide. Decomposes in hot water. Calcium silicide is flammable and may ignite spontaneously in the air. Calcium silicide can be formed by reacting Ca metal and Si in an inert atmosphere at 850°C. It is a white or dark gray to black solid with a melting point between 700 and 935°C. Feel free to send an inquiry to get the latest price if you would like to buy Calcium Silicide CaSi2 Powder in bulk.

How is Calcium Silicide CaSi2 Powder produced?
1. Calcium silicide with higher purity can be obtained by direct melting of elemental silicon and calcium. But the operation must be carried out in two steps.
The first step: mix the pure calcium shavings and pure silicon powder evenly, put them in a hard biscuit porcelain boat, quickly put the porcelain boat into the quartz reaction tube, and pour CO2 into the tube. The porcelain boat has been heated to 1000°C. In just a few seconds, the mixture melts and the reaction proceeds violently. Take out the porcelain boat, the resultant CaSi is immediately coagulated and crushed. CaSi is a porous block with a lead-gray color and metallic luster.
The second step: Mix CaSi with the calculated amount of Si powder uniformly, put it in a nickel boat, and heat it at 1000°C in an H2 gas stream. Because the final stage of the reaction proceeds slowly, it needs to be heated for 15 hours.
2. Mix pure CaO and silicon with appropriate fluxes CaF2 and CaCl2, and melt at 1400°C to prepare CaSi2, which is mixed with a large amount of silicon element.

Application of Calcium Silicide CaSi2 Powder:
There are many uses for calcium silicide. Some of these include:
Calcium silicide is used to make special metal alloys, for example for phosphorus removal and as a deoxidizer.
In the pyrotechnic industry, it is used as a fuel to make special mixtures, such as smoke, flashing components, and striking caps.
Calcium silicide is used to make certain initiators, pyrotechnics and smoke components.
Silicon and calcium alloys are mainly used as desulfurizes and deoxidizers in the steel industry and foundry industry.
It has been found that calcium silicide is extremely corrosive to all metals including refractory metals.
By reducing the calcium oxide in the electrolyte and the silica particles and the dissolved carbon dioxide at the same time, calcium intermetallic silicide (CaSi2) is formed.
Silicon-based fuel is used in some time-delay mixtures, such as to control explosive bolts, grenades, and infrared decoys. Smoke components usually contain hexachloroethane; during the combustion process, they will produce silicon tetrachloride, just like the titanium tetrachloride used in smoke screens, which reacts with moisture in the air to produce a dense white mist. Some mixtures use gum arabic to inhibit the decomposition of calcium silicide.
The self-heating canned military rations invented during World War II used a 1:1 mixture of iron oxide and calcium silicide similar to thermite. When this mixture is ignited, an appropriate amount of heat is generated and no gas is generated.
