Preparation and Application of Iron Powder

History of Iron Powder Production

Iron Powder is an important raw material in powder metallurgy. The industrial production and application of Iron Powder began in the 1920s. At that time, electrolytic Iron Powder and carbonyl Iron Powder produced in Germany were mainly used as catalysts in the chemical industry. Production of powder metallurgy iron - based parts began in the 1930s. In 1933, the vortex grinding method was developed in Germany to produce Iron Powder. In 1936, Based on sponge iron production, Sweden used reduction method to produce low-cost Iron Powder from magnetite. After the 1940s in Germany, Britain, the United States and other countries, molten metal atomization method to produce Iron Powder, and on this basis rapidly promoted the production of atomized pre-alloy powder (alloy steel, superalloy, etc.). China began to produce Iron Powder by reduction in 1958, and began to develop various alloys and alloy steel powder by atomization in the 1960s.

Method of producing Iron Powder

Reduction method USES solid or gas reducing agent (coke, charcoal, anthracite, water gas, conversion of natural gas, decomposition of ammonia, hydrogen, etc.) to produce spongy iron oxide (iron concentrate, steel scale rolling, etc.). Atomization USES high pressure water flow or air flow to blast molten iron into a mist to make Iron Powder. This method USES electric furnace smelting, can use the scrap steel as the raw material, the productivity is high; However, after atomization, reduction annealing (decarburization and oxygen reduction), grinding and other subsequent treatments are needed to obtain high quality Iron Powder.

Application of Iron Powder

(1) as raw materials of powder metallurgy products, the consumption of Iron Powder accounted for about 60 ~ 80% of the total consumption.

(2) As the raw material of the electrode, adding 10 ~ 70% Iron Powder in the coating can improve the welding process of the electrode and significantly improve the deposition efficiency.

(3) as a flame cutting spray, when cutting steel products, to oxygen - acetylene flame spray Iron Powder, can improve the cutting performance, expand the range of cutting steel, improve the cutting thickness.
