What is aerogel blanket?

What is aerogel blanket?
Aerogel blanket is a flexible thermal insulation mat made of nano-silica or metallic aerogel as the main material, compounded with carbon fiber or ceramic glass fiber wool or pre-oxidized fiber mat through a special process.

Aerogel blankets are combined with reinforcing fibers (such as carbon fiber, ceramic glass fiber, pre-oxidized fiber, etc.) through a special composite process to become flexible thermal insulation materials.
Its characteristics include low thermal conductivity and a certain tensile and compressive strength, belonging to a new type of pipe insulation material. At the same time, the aerogel blanket also has the characteristics of soft, easy to cut, small density, inorganic fire prevention, overall hydrophobicity, green environmental protection and so on. Aerogel itself is a kind of solid material with extremely high porosity and low density, these properties make aerogel blankets have the following remarkable features:

Characteristics of aerogel blanket:
1. Low thermal conductivity: An aerogel blanket has an extremely low thermal conductivity within a certain temperature range (usually below about 400°C), which means that it can effectively prevent the transfer of heat and provide excellent thermal insulation performance.
2. Lightweight: Aerogel blankets are lightweight due to their high porosity and low-density characteristics, which greatly reduces the burden during installation and use.
3. Flexibility and cutability: the composite fiber material of the aerogel blanket has good flexibility and plasticity. It can be easily cut into the required shape to adapt to a variety of complex surfaces and spaces for thermal insulation needs.
4. Tensile and compressive strength: Although it may look fragile, an aerogel blanket has a certain mechanical strength and can resist a certain amount of stretching and pressure, ensuring structural stability during use.
5. High-temperature resistance: some types of aerogel blankets (e.g., silicone-based aerogel blankets) have excellent high-temperature resistance and are suitable for use in high-temperature environments.
6. Chemical stability: aerogel blankets usually have good chemical stability, are insensitive to most chemicals, and are not susceptible to corrosion.
Types of aerogel blanket:
1. Glass fiber aerogel blanket:
Glass fiber aerogel blanket is a kind of flexible thermal insulation material which is composed of nano-silica aerogel and glass fiber.
In order to enhance the mechanical properties of the aerogel and adapt to the installation, bending and shearing requirements of practical applications, the aerogel is compounded onto a glass fiber substrate. Glass fiber is a commonly used reinforcement material, known for its high strength, high temperature resistance, good chemical stability and good insulation properties. Through special technology, silica aerogel is closely combined with glass fiber felt (or cotton) to form a composite material with excellent thermal insulation properties and certain mechanical stability.

2. Silicone-based aerogel blankets: made of silicone polymers as the main ingredient, with good flexibility and durability, suitable for insulation applications that require bending and complex shapes.
3. Nano aerogel blanket: made of nano-sized aerogel particles with extremely low thermal conductivity and excellent thermal insulation performance, suitable for applications with very high thermal insulation requirements.
4. Composite aerogel blanket: made of aerogel compounded with other insulation materials (such as glass fiber, rock wool, etc.) to obtain a better thermal insulation effect and balance of physical properties.
5. Preoxygenated wire aerogel blanket: preoxygenated wire is used as the base material, mixed with silica aerogel to form a porous structure after heat treatment, and then fixed on the fiber through the composite process to form an insulation material.

Application of aerogel blanket:
Aerogel blanket is widely used in many fields because of its unique performance characteristics:
1. Building thermal insulation: used for thermal insulation of walls, roofs, floors, doors and, windows, etc., to improve the energy efficiency of buildings.
2. Industrial equipment thermal insulation: such as chemical pipelines, heat pipe network, steam pipelines, storage tanks, reactors and other industrial facilities of thermal insulation, reduce heat loss, enhance energy efficiency.
3. Aerospace: as a lightweight and efficient thermal insulation material, it is used in the thermal insulation layer of spacecraft, aircraft cabin and components.
4.Transportation: used in automobiles, ships, rail transportation and other fields of thermal insulation system, reduce energy consumption, enhance passenger comfort.
5. Electronic and electrical appliances: used as highly efficient thermal management materials in battery packs, electronic equipment shells, data center server cooling and other fields.
6. Low-temperature cold preservation: used as a cold preservation material in low-temperature environments such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage and transportation, freezing and refrigeration equipment, etc., to prevent heat penetration.
