Properties and Applications of Aluminum Oxide and Spherical Aluminum Oxide
Introduction to Spherical Aluminum Oxide Powder
Aluminum oxide is a white solid, a compound of Aluminium and oxygen. The formula is Al2O3. It is also called bauxite in mining, ceramics, and material science. Its common purity is 99.5% and 96%.
The reserves of aluminum oxide on the earth are only second to silicon oxide, which is a kind of ceramic raw material. The strong bond between aluminum and oxygen makes aluminum oxide in oxide have the highest hardness. It has high chemical stability and it has excellent corrosion resistance for most of the acid, alkaline, salt, and molten solution.
Aluminum oxide has many homogenous crystals, there are more than 10 known, there are mainly 3 kinds of crystals, that is, α -al2o3, β -al2o3, and γ -al2o3. Among them, different structures and properties are also different, and almost completely converted to α -al2o3 at high-temperature above 1300℃.
The nature of corundum is α shape belongs to the hexagonal most dense accumulation, melting point, high hardness, insoluble in acid and alkali corrosion resistance, good insulation.
Physicochemical Properties of Spherical Aluminum Oxide Powder
The chemical activity of aluminum oxide decreases with the increase of lattice energy, and the chemical activity of colloidal aluminum oxide hydroxide is the highest. The chemical activity of γ series compounds is much higher than that of α series isomers. Corundum is an inert compound that is resistant to strong acids and bases even at 573K and has a high melting point (2326K) and Mohs hardness of up to 9. Aluminum oxide and aluminum hydroxide are virtually insoluble in water, but soluble in acid and base solutions, and are typical amphoteric compounds. Their alkalinity and acidity are weak, only the aluminum salt solution of a strong acid is very stable and does not hydrolyze, so we can use sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid or nitric acid, and other inorganic acids to decompose aluminum ore to produce the aluminum salt solution. Aluminum oxide and aluminum hydroxide are dissolved in a caustic solution to form an aluminum oxidete solution. They react with alkaline metals or alkaline earth metal oxides at high temperatures to produce various aluminum oxidetes. Its sodium, potassium, and barium salt can be directly dissolved in water, calcium aluminum oxidete is in the reaction with sodium carbonate solution can be transformed into sodium aluminum oxidete solution.
The spherical aluminum oxide produced by the high-temperature melt injection method has the characteristics of high sphericity and high content of α phase aluminum oxide, which shows excellent properties when used as filler for rubber, plastic, and ceramic materials.
The properties of Spherical Aluminum Oxide:
1. High filling: It has high particle sphericity and wide particle size distribution. It can fill rubber and plastic with high density and get a mixture with low viscosity and good fluidity.
2. High thermal conductivity: Because it can be filled with high density, compared with crystalline silicon powder, it can get a mixture of high thermal conductivity and good heat dissipation.
3. Low wear: Because of its spherical appearance, the wear of the mixer, molding machine, and mold equipment is greatly reduced, which can prolong the service life of the equipment.
Applications of Spherical Aluminum Oxide Powder
1. Ruby and sapphire are mainly composed of aluminum oxide, which shows different colors due to other impurities. Ruby contains chromium oxide and shows red, sapphire contains iron oxide and titanium dioxide and shows blue.
2. Aluminum oxide is the reason why metallic aluminum is not easily corroded in air. The pure metallic aluminum reacts readily with oxygen in the air to form a thin film of aluminum oxide covering surfaces exposed to aluminum in the air. This film of aluminum oxide prevents further oxidation of aluminum. The thickness and properties of this oxide film can be enhanced by a process called anodizing (anodic corrosion).
3. Aluminum is a good conductor of electricity and heat, while aluminum oxide is an insulator of both. The aluminum oxide crystal form of corundum because of high hardness, suitable for grinding materials and cutting tools
4. Aluminum oxide crystals can also be used as epitaxial substrates.
5. Aluminum oxide powder is commonly used as a medium for chromatographic analysis.
6. In August 2004, scientists working for 3M company in the United States developed an alloy made from aluminum and rare earth elements to make reinforced glass called Transparent Aluminum oxide.
7. It can be used in the emergency brake device of high-speed railway trains (spraying aluminum oxide powder on the track to increase friction)
8. The porous aluminum oxide with a high specific surface area is called activated aluminum oxide, which is commonly used as catalysts, adsorbents, dehydrating agents, and catalyst carriers.
9. Used to make firebricks.
