Is calcium stearate soluble in water?
What is Calcium stearate?
Calcium stearate is a white powder, insoluble in water, cold ethanol, and ether, soluble in organic solvents such as hot benzene, benzene, and turpentine, and slightly soluble in hot ethanol and ether. When heated to 400℃, it slowly decomposes, is flammable, and decomposes into stearic acid and corresponding calcium salt when it meets strong acid, which is hygroscopic.

More about Calcium stearate
CAS: 1592-23-0
Molecular formula: C36H70CaO4
Linear molecular formula (CH3(CH2)16COO)2Ca
Molecular weight: 607.01700
Density: 1.08g/cm3
Melting point: 147-149°C
Boiling point: 359.4cat 760mmhg
Flashpoint: 162.4ºC
Synthesis method of Calcium stearate Powder
1.Direct method
Adding a certain amount of stearic acid and CaO into a reaction pot equipped with a stirrer and a thermometer, heating to melt, slowly adding H2O2 as a catalyst under constant stirring, vacuuming, and controlling the reaction temperature at 140-150℃ for 1.5-2.0h... After the reaction is completed, the product is obtained by discharging, cooling, and crushing.
2. Complex decomposition method
Dissolve stearic acid in 20 times hot water, add saturated caustic soda solution, and saponify at about 75℃ to generate a dilute sodium stearate solution. Then the calcium chloride solution with a content of 1074kg/m3 was added to the sodium stearate solution, and the product calcium stearate was precipitated at about 65℃. Then filter, wash with wat, and drying at about 90 DEG C to obtain that finished product.
Applications of Calcium stearate Powder
1.In hard products, the gelation speed can be improved by mixing with basic lead salt and lead soap.
2.It is also used for food packaging, medical devices, and other soft films and devices that require non-toxicity.
3.It can also be used as a halogen absorbent for polyethylene and polypropylene to eliminate the bad influence of residual catalysts on color and stability.
4.As a plasticizer in rubber processing, it can soften natural rubber and all-synthetic rubber but has little effect on vulcanization.
5.It is also used as a lubricant for polyolefin fibers and molding compounds, a thickening agent for grease, a waterproof agent for textiles, a flatting agent for paints, a plasticizer for making plastic records, etc.
6.As halogen absorbent in polyethylene and polypropylene;
7.Lubricants and release agents for thermosetting plastics such as phenolic and amino;
8.Thickening agent for lubricating grease;
9.Waterproofing agent for waterproof fabric;
10.Paint flatting agent and pencil lead lubricant, etc.
11.Food grade calcium stearate is used as an anti-caking agent.
12.Calcium stearate is also used in pencil lead production, medicine, and perfume industries.
