What is Titanium Nitride?
Titanium nitride is a compound with a molecular formula of TiN and a molecular weight of 61.88. The TiN powder is generally yellow-brown, the ultra-fine TiN powder is black, and the TiN crystal is golden yellow. The melting point of TiN is 2950℃, the Mohs hardness is 8-9, and the thermal shock resistance is good. TiN has a higher melting point than most transition metal nitrides and a lower density than most metal nitrides. It can be used as conductive materials such as electrodes and electrical contacts for molten salt electrolysis.
The main features of Titanium Nitride
There are two kinds of titanium nitride (Ti2N2) and titanium tetranitride (Ti3N4). Titanium dinitride is a yellow solid. Dissolve in boiling aqua regia. Ammonia is released in the presence of hot sodium hydroxide solution. The properties of titanium tetranitride are similar to those of titanium dioxide.
It can be obtained by direct reaction of titanium and nitrogen at 1200 °C. The coating can be formed by a vapor deposition method of titanium tetrachloride, nitrogen, and hydrogen mixed gas. Titanium dinitride is obtained by heating titanium metal in nitrogen or ammonia at 900-1000°C. Titanium tetranitride is obtained by heating titanium tetrachloride in ammonia at 1000°C.

The applications of Titanium Nitride
1. Titanium nitride coatings are widely used on metal edges to maintain the corrosion resistance of mechanical molds, such as drills and milling cutters, often improving their life by a factor of three or more.
2. Because of its metallic luster, it is often used as a decorative embellishment for clothing and automobiles. As an outer coating, nickel (Ni) or chromium (Cr) is usually used as a plated substrate to package pipes and door and window hardware.
3. The coating is also used in aerospace and military, as well as to protect the sliding surfaces of bicycles and motorcycles, and even the shock-absorbing shafts of remote-controlled toy cars.
4. The material is non-toxic and FDA compliant, so it is also commonly used in medical devices, such as maintaining the sharpness of the edges of scalpel blades and orthopedic bone saws, or directly as implanted prostheses (especially hip replacement implants) ) and other medical implants.
5. Titanium nitride films can be used in microelectronics as a conductive barrier between active devices and metal contacts. While diffusing the film into metal silicon, its conductivity (30-70 μΩ·cm) is sufficient to form a good conductive connection.
6. This particular "barrier metal" also has the chemical or mechanical properties of ceramics, a process that is heavily used in current 45nm chip designs to improve transistor performance. In the battery field, by combining titanium nitride with a gate dielectric layer (eg, HfSiO), higher dielectric constant, scaled gate length, lower leakage, higher drive current, the same or better threshold voltage. 7. The high biological stability extends the application field of this alloy to bioelectronic electrodes, such as subretinal prosthesis projects and microelectromechanical systems (biological microelectromechanical systems) in biomedicine, making smart implants or in vivo biosensors Able to withstand severe body fluid corrosion.
