Chromium has both oxygen affinity and iron affinity, with the oxygen affinity being stronger. It only shows sulfur affinity when reduction and sulfur fugacity are high. Chromium is generally trivalent under endogenous conditions. The ionic radii of Cr3+ at the hexacidic acid site are close to those of Al3+ and Fe3+ so that they can be widely homogeneous. In addition, elements that can be isomorphically substituted with chromium include Mn, Mg, Ni, Co, Zn, etc., so chromium is widely distributed in magnesia borosilicate minerals and accessory minerals. Under strong oxidizing conditions in the supergene zone (alkaline medium), Cr3+ is oxidized into chromate ions in the form of Cr6+, turning inactive chromium ions into easily soluble chromium anions for migration. When encountering highly polarizable ions (such as Cu, Pb, etc.), insoluble chromic acid minerals are formed. There are about 50 kinds of chromium-containing minerals found in nature, which belong to oxides, chromates, and silicates. In addition, there are a few hydroxides, iodates, nitrides, and sulfides. Among them, chromium nitride and chromium sulfide minerals are only found in meteorites.

 

In the versatile refractory industry, chromium ore plays a pivotal role in the production of magnesia-chrome bricks, chrome bricks, and chrome-aluminum bricks. The use of chrome ore in refractory materials production is categorized into two grades. The first-grade product serves as a natural refractory material, with quality requirements of Cr2O3≥35%, SiO2≤8%, and CaO≤2%. Second-level products are utilized for the production of chrome bricks and chrome magnesia bricks, with quality requirements of Cr2O3> 30%~32 %, SiO2 < 11%, and CaO <3 %.

About chrome ore beneficiation methods

1. Gravity separation method The Gravity separation method is a commonly used chromium ore beneficiation method. The original ore is gravity separated through a gravity separator and a pulser to achieve the purpose of improving grade and recovery rate.
The gravity separation method is suitable for the beneficiation of coarse-grained chromium ore. It is easy to operate and has low cost, so it is widely used in Indonesian chrome ore mining.

2. Magnetic separation method The Magnetic separation method is a method that uses a magnetic field to select iron ore and other magnetic minerals in chromium ore, which can effectively improve the grade of chromium ore.
The magnetic separation method is easy to operate and is suitable for chromium ore with a high content of magnetic minerals. It is one of the commonly used methods in chromium ore beneficiation.

3. Flotation method Flotation method is a separation method that uses the wet buoyancy characteristics of different minerals. It has a good separation effect on organic minerals such as chromium sulfide in chromium ore.
The flotation method is not limited by ore particle size. It is suitable for beneficiation of fine-grained chromium ore, which can improve the recovery rate and grade of chromium ore.
