What Is Dysprosium Oxide

Dysprosium oxide is a chemical substance with the chemical formula Dy2O3. White powder, slightly hygroscopic, can absorb moisture and carbon dioxide in the air. Magnetism is many times stronger than high iron oxide. Soluble in acid and ethanol. Mainly used for lighting sources.

The Physical And Chemical Characteristics of Dysprosium Oxide

1. Physical and chemical data

The relative molecular mass of dysprosium oxide is 373.00, the relative density is (d274) 7.81, the melting point is 2340±10°C, and the boiling point is about 3900°C.

2. Physical and chemical properties

Dysprosium oxide is a white crystalline powder, insoluble in water, soluble in acid and ethanol. When exposed to the air, it easily absorbs carbon dioxide and turns into dysprosium carbonate.

The Main Use of Dysprosium Oxide

Dysprosium oxide can be used as a raw material for preparing dysprosium metal, as an additive for glass, neodymium iron boron permanent magnets, and also used in metal halide lamps, magneto-optical memory materials, yttrium iron or yttrium aluminum garnet, and atomic energy industries. Dysprosium oxide can also be used as an additive for neodymium iron boron permanent magnets. Adding about 2 to 3% of dysprosium to this magnet can increase its coercivity. In the past, the demand for dysprosium was not large, but with NdFeB As the demand for magnets increases, it becomes a necessary additional element, and the grade must be around 95~99.9%, and the demand is also increasing rapidly. Dysprosium oxide is also used as a raw material for preparing dysprosium metal, as an additive for glass, neodymium iron boron permanent magnets, and also used in metal halide lamps, magneto-optical memory materials, yttrium iron or yttrium aluminum garnet, and atomic energy industries.

Preparation of Dysprosium Oxide Luminescent Material

Weigh appropriate amount of europium oxide and dysprosium oxide powder in turn, dissolve with diluted concentrated nitric acid, heat and stir to prepare ionic solution A, then weigh appropriate amount of strontium nitrate, aluminum nitrate nonahydrate, and urea boric acid, dissolve in double distilled water to form a matrix In the state of heating and stirring, solution B is slowly added to A to obtain a mixed solution. After evaporating part of the water at 80°C, it becomes a sol. The precursor solution is quickly transferred to the corundum crucible and sealed; the high temperature resistance furnace is preheated to 600°C, put the crucible containing the precursor solution quickly and close the furnace door. The precursor solution immediately boils when heated, the combustion reaction proceeds violently, and the reaction emits a large amount of heat. The whole process is completed in 5 minutes. After taking out the sample, it is cooled at room temperature.

The product is a light yellow-green loose porous solid. Grind the product to be SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+ luminescent material powder has an initial illuminance of 15lux and a afterglow time of up to 12h. The excitation peaks are 320nm and 365nm, and the emission peak is 510nm. If the particle size of the luminescent powder reaches the nanometer level, the relative content of Dy and Eu changes, or the crystal lattice is destroyed, the luminous brightness is reduced or even no light is emitted, but the particle size of the luminescent powder is too large, which will cause the coating film to be uneven or the appearance is not smooth. In this test, the particle size of the luminescent powder is above 75μm.
