Sorbitan monostearate is an organic compound with the molecular formula C24H46O6. The pure product is in the form of beige flakes or brownish yellow wax. Non toxic. Relative density is 0.98~1.03. Insoluble in cold water, glycerol, ethanol, isopropanol, paraffin oil, soybean oil, and lard. Gel is formed in hot water, which can be dispersed in hot glycerin and turbid in hot xylene. It belongs to non-ionic surfactants. It is an oil in water emulsifier. The oral LD50 of its mice is greater than 15000 mg/kg, with an ADI value of 0-25 mg/kg. It is formed by esterification of stearic acid and sorbitol in the presence of sodium hydroxide, followed by bleaching and slicing

Sorbitan monostearate is insoluble in water, soluble in hot ethanol, ether, methanol, and carbon tetrachloride, dispersed in warm water and benzene, insoluble in cold water and acetone. Freezing point 50-52 ℃, HLB value 4.7. It is a good W/O emulsification, with strong emulsification, dispersion, lubrication, is also a good stabilizer and unloading agent.

Production Methods of Sorbitan Monostearate
This product is a mixture of sorbitol, monohydrate, dihydrate, and stearic acid esters. The manufacturing method is to first dehydrate sorbitol at 150-152 ℃, and then esterify it with stearic acid under the catalysis of sodium bicarbonate; Or by α- Direct esterification of sorbitol and stearic acid at 180-280 ℃.
