Performance of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfonate
Sodium dodecyl sulfonate has the characteristics of rich and fine foam, low grading power, low irritation to skin and hair, and good biodegradability.
Production Method of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfonate
1. Sulfonation: In a 1000ml three necked bottle equipped with a cooling reflux device and mechanical stirring, add 126 grams of anhydrous sodium sulfite and 450ml of water, and then add 162 grams of 1-bromodedecane and 1.2 grams of tetrapropylammonium bromide. Heat and reflux for 16 hours until the reaction solution is clear and does not stratify
2. Purification: Evaporate the water in the reaction mixture under reduced pressure at 85 ℃/20mmHg, dry the remaining solid, crush it, and load it into a Soxhlet extractor. Extract with 1500ml anhydrous ethanol to obtain 200g of crude product. Recrystallize with 3000ml anhydrous ethanol and filter to obtain pure sodium dodecyl sulfonate
3. Drying: Place the purified product in a vacuum drying oven and dry it for 2 hours at 80 ℃/100mmHg to obtain 166 grams of sodium dodecyl sulfonate (yield 61%), with a content of ≥ 99.6%.

FAQ of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfonate
Q1: What is Sodium Dodecyl Sulfonate (SDS) used for?
Re: Sodium Dodecyl Sulfonate (SDS) is an anionic surfactant widely used in various applications. It is commonly found in detergents and cleaning products due to its excellent foaming and cleansing properties. SDS is also used in personal care products such as shampoos, soaps, and body washes, where it helps remove dirt and oil from the skin and hair. Additionally, it serves as an emulsifier, wetting agent, and dispersant in industrial processes, including the production of paints, coatings, and inks.
Q2: What is the chemical formula of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfonate?
Re: The chemical formula of Sodium Dodecyl Sulfonate is C₁₂H₂₅SO₃Na. This formula represents the molecular structure, which includes a dodecyl (C12) alkyl chain, a sulfonate group, and a sodium ion.
Q3: How should Sodium Dodecyl Sulfonate be stored?
Re: Sodium Dodecyl Sulfonate should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and incompatible materials such as strong acids or alkalis. It is recommended to store it in tightly sealed containers to prevent moisture absorption and degradation. The storage area should be well-ventilated, and the temperature should generally be kept between 5°C and 30°C (41°F to 86°F).
Q4: Is Sodium Dodecyl Sulfonate hazardous?
Re: Sodium Dodecyl Sulfonate can be an irritant to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. It is important to handle it with appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, safety goggles, and a dust mask if necessary. Follow the safety guidelines outlined in the Safety Data Sheet (SDS). In case of contact with the skin or eyes, rinse thoroughly with water and seek medical attention if necessary. Ensure good ventilation in the working area to avoid inhalation of dust. While it is generally considered safe when used as directed, proper handling and storage are crucial to minimize any potential risks.
