Manganese monoxide has the appearance of grass green or gray green cubic powder or octahedral crystals. Relative density is 5.43~5.46. Melting point is 1650℃. Dissociation and sublimation at 3400℃. Insoluble in water, soluble in acid and ammonium chloride. In hot concentrated ammonium chloride solution, manganese chloride and ammonia are formed. When heated in air, it is easily converted into other high-valent manganese oxides, such as manganese tetraoxide, manganese dioxide, manganese trioxide, etc., which are difficult to reduce. It is not reduced by hydrogen at 1200℃, but can be reduced by carbon at 1100~1200℃. Hydrogen and manganese dioxide are generated in red hot water vapor. Heated with sulfur, sulfur dioxide and sulfur oxides are generated. It melts in inert gas without decomposition. Manganese monoxide is mainly used as a raw material for the production of ferrite, a desiccant for coatings and varnishes, a catalyst for the manufacture of amyl alcohol, a feed adjuvant, a trace element fertilizer, etc. It is also used in medicine, smelting, welding, fabric reduction printing and dyeing, glass coloring, oil bleaching, ceramic kiln industry and the manufacture of dry batteries, etc.
