What is calcium stearate?

Synthesis of calcium stearate
1. Direct method: add a certain amount of stearic acid and CaO into the reaction pot equipped with an agitator and thermometer, heat up to melt, slowly add catalyst H2O2 under constant stirring, vacuum, control the reaction temperature at 140~150 , and react for 1.5~2.0h. After the reaction is completed, discharge, cool, and crush to obtain the product
2. Double decomposition method: Dissolve stearic acid in 20 times hot water, add saturated caustic soda solution and saponify at about 75 to generate a dilute sodium stearate solution. Then add calcium chloride solution with a 1074kg/m3 into sodium stearate solution, perform a double decomposition reaction at about 65 , and precipitate the product calcium stearate. Then filter, wash, and dry at about 90 to obtain the finished product.
 
Use of calcium stearate
1. It is used in oil field operations as a lubricant and releasing agent. It is also used as a heat stabilizer for PVC and a lubricant and release agent for various plastics processing. In hard products, it can be used in combination with basic lead salts and lead soaps to improve the gelling speed. It is also used in food packaging, medical appliances, soft films, and appliances that require no poison. It can also be used as a halogen absorbent for polyethene and polypropylene; to eliminate the adverse effects of residual catalyst on colour and stability, it can be used as a plasticizer in rubber processing to soften natural rubber and synthetic rubber without affecting vulcanization. It can also be used as a thickener for lubricating grease, a waterproof agent for textiles, a matting agent for paints, and a plasticizer for making plastic records
2. Calcium stearate is a good non-toxic heat stabilizer and lubricant and a smooth and water-resistant agent for adhesives and coatings.
