What is aluminum nitride?
Aluminum nitride is an atomic crystal which belongs to diamond-like nitride and can be stabilized to 2200 at the highest temperature. It has high room temperature strength, which decreases slowly with the increase in temperature. It has good thermal conductivity and a small thermal expansion coefficient and is a good heat-resistant impact material. It has strong resistance to molten metal corrosion and is an ideal crucible material for melting and casting pure iron, aluminium or aluminium alloys. Aluminium nitride is also an electrical insulator with good dielectric properties, and it is also very promising to be used as an electrical component. The aluminium nitride coating on the gallium arsenide's surface can protect it from ion implantation during annealing. Aluminium nitride is a catalyst for transforming hexagonal boron nitride into cubic boron nitride. It reacts slowly with water at room temperature. It can be synthesized from aluminium powder in ammonia or nitrogen atmosphere at 800~1000 , and the product is white to greyish blue powder. Or it can be synthesized from the Al2O3-C-N2 system at 1600~1750 , and the product is a greyish-white powder. Or aluminium chloride and ammonia can be prepared by the gas-phase reaction. A vapour deposition method can synthesize the coating from the AlCl3-NH3 system.
Use of aluminum nitride
It is reported that most of the current research is to develop a semiconductor (gallium nitride or alloy aluminium gallium nitride) based light-emitting diode operating in ultraviolet light, and the wavelength of light is 250 nanometers. In May 2006, it was reported that an inefficient diode could emit light waves with a wavelength of 210 nanometers. Using vacuum ultraviolet reflectance, it was measured that a single aluminium nitride crystal has an energy gap of 6.2 eV. Theoretically, The energy gap allows some waves with a wavelength of about 200 nm to pass through. However, many difficulties need to be overcome in commercial implementation. Aluminium nitride is used in photoelectric engineering, including optical storage interfaces and electronic substrates as induced layers, wafer carriers with high thermal conductivity, and military applications.
Due to the piezoelectric effect of aluminium nitride, the epitaxial extension of aluminium nitride crystals is also used for surface acoustic wave detectors. The detectors are placed on silicon wafers. Only a few places can reliably fabricate these thin films
Aluminium nitride ceramics have high strength at room and high temperatures, a small expansion coefficient and good thermal conductivity, and can be used as heat exchanger materials for high-temperature structural parts.
Aluminium nitride ceramics can resist the corrosion of iron, aluminium and other metals and alloys. It can be used as crucibles and casting die materials for melting Al, Cu, Ag, Pb and other metals.

(1) The thermal conductivity is high (about 20W/m · K), close to BeO and SiC, and more than five times that of Al2O3

(3) Various electrical properties (dielectric constant, dielectric loss, volume resistivity, dielectric strength) are excellent
(4) Good mechanical properties, bending strength higher than Al2O3 and BeO ceramics, can be sintered under normal pressure
