What is manganese dioxide?
Manganese dioxide is insoluble in water, weak alkali, nitric acid, and cold sulfuric acid. It is dissolved in concentrated hydrochloric acid under heating to produce chlorine gas. Manganese dioxide is an amphotropic oxide, a very stable black powder solid at room temperature, and can be used as a depolarizing for dry cells. The laboratory often uses its oxidation and concentrated HCl action to produce chlorine gas.
Main uses of manganese dioxide
Manganese dioxide can be used as a dry battery remover, catalyst, and oxidant for the synthetic industry, colorant and fading agent of the glass and enamel industry; for manufacturing of metal manganese, special alloys, iron manganese castings, gas mask, and ferrite of electronic materials; also, in the rubber industry to increase the viscosity of rubber; in chemical experiments, as a catalyst for hydrogen peroxide decomposition to oxygen; as a catalyst for heating potassium chlorate decomposition to oxygen; in aluminum thermal reaction with simple aluminum powder to produce manganese. Used as a pigment, yellow glass, etc.; react with hot concentrated hydrochloric acid; react with molten caustic potassium (potassium hydroxide) in the air; and decompose potassium permanganate, manganese dioxide as self-catalyst for potassium permanganate.
Preparation method of manganese dioxide:

The electrolytic method of high-temperature manganese sulfate solution is generally used, and both manganese carbonate ore and soft manganese ore can be used as raw materials. The preparation of manganese sulfate solution includes leaching, iron removal, neutralization, heavy metal removal, filtration, and static calcium and magnesium removal. After high-temperature electrolysis, crude products are made, and qualified crystals are processed by stripping, crushing, washing, neutralization, and drying. When using a manganese chloride solution, electrolysis can produce fiber manganese dioxide. There is also manganese carbonate, manganese nitrate pyrolysis method, by low price manganese oxide and oxidants such as sodium chloride, chlorine gas, oxygen, and other combined reaction direct oxidation.
