What is a molecular sieve?
A molecular sieve is a material containing precise and single tiny holes that can be used to absorb gases or liquids. Sufficiently small molecules can be adsorbed through the pore, while larger molecules do not. The molecular sieve is powder crystal, with a metallic luster, hardness of 3~5, a relative density of 2~2.8, natural zeolite color, synthetic zeolite is white, insoluble in water, thermal stability and acid resistance with the increase of SiO2 / Al2O3 composition ratio. A molecular sieve has a large specific surface area, up to 300~1000m2 / g. The inner crystal surface is highly polarized for a class of efficient adsorbent and is also a class of solid acid. The surface has a high acid concentration, and acid strength can cause a positive carbon ion catalytic reaction. When the metal ions in the composition are exchanged with other ions in the solution, the pore size can be adjusted, and its adsorption properties and catalytic properties can be changed so as to produce molecular sieve catalysts with different properties.
Main uses of molecular sieve
Application in the field of drying and purification process of molecular sieve:
(1) Dehydration. The polar hydrophilicity of the zeolite molecular sieve (such as type A, type X, etc.) with A low silicon-aluminum ratio can dry the air. In addition, in recent years, the incorporation of ethanol into gasoline to replace some gasoline has been widely valued. As a fuel, the water content of ethanol is required to be less than 0.8%. Due to the azeotropic of ethanol and water, only 95% ethanol can be obtained through distillation. For ethanol dehydration with low water content, zeolite molecular sieve adsorption dehydration is the optimal choice.
The zeolite sieve applied in this method is A or X, while the KA type is the best, which on the one hand, uses the polarity of the A zeolite sieve. On the other hand, because the pore diameter of the KA zeolite sieve is about 0.3nm, water molecules can be freely entered. In comparison, the diameter of ethanol molecules greater than 0.3nm cannot enter the pore of the zeolite sieve. This zeolite molecular sieve dehydration process is the preferred process for the industrial production of fuel ethanol.
(2) Purify the pollutants in the air. With the rapid development of industry, the emissions of H2S, SO2, NOX, and formaldehyde are increasing, and the pollution caused has seriously harmed people's life and the environment.
