What is wurtzite boron nitride?
Wurtzite boron nitride for short w-BN is a metastable high-pressure polymorph of boron nitride, which can only be fabricated as micrometer-size powders by the shock compression of hexagonal boron nitride. Boron nitride is composed of nitrogen atoms and boron molecules crystal, the chemical composition of 43.6% boron and 56.4% nitrogen. The method of obtaining wurtzite boron nitride in the laboratory is usually to convert hexagonal boron nitride to wurtzite type boron nitride (wBN) and a little cubic boron nitride mixed product by explosion impact method. Under ultra-high mild and high-pressure conditions of more than 6gpa and 1400°C, the atoms move and rearrange and can be converted into cubic boron nitride. It is a superhard material with a hardness close to diamond.
Is wurtzite boron nitride harder than diamond?
The simulation showed that wurtzite boron nitride would withstand 18 percent more stress than diamond. Using a standard hardness test, which indents the material with a small pyramid and measures the force required, researchers recently observed that the w-BN, in fact, easily exceeded the diamond's hardness value, 114 Gpa (16.5 million pounds/square inch), versus diamond's 97 Gpa.

Electronic application
In recent years, wurtzite boron nitride has been used in advanced optical and electronic devices because of its wide band gap, strong thermal conductivity, and high spontaneous polarization. Wurtzite boron nitride is a promising broadband semiconductor with a broader energy gap and higher thermal conductivity than gallium nitride. The special electrolysis of boron nitride at high temperatures makes it an excellent resistance material. It is also used as a high-temperature solid lubricant and extrusion anti-wear additive.
Mechanical application
Wurtzite boron nitride is made by combining nitrogen and boron under high pressure. Its structure is also diamond, but it is composed of other atoms other than carbon atoms. Diamond is formed after a certain period of time under high-pressure carbon, and zinc boron nitride is formed under high-pressure volcanic eruption under high temperature and high-pressure molding; its hardness is 18% higher than diamond. This high-hardness, high-rigidity boron nitride material can also be made into a variety of tools, wire drawing tools, and abrasive tools to meet the increasingly high hardness requirements of the modern machinery industry.
