Samarium is a metal element with the chemical symbol Sm and atomic number 62. Samarium is a silvery white metal with medium hardness, which is easily oxidized in air. As a typical lanthanide, the oxidation state of samarium is usually +3. The most common compounds of samarium (II) are SmO, SmS, SmSe, and SmTe. Preparation of samarium oxide
1. The rare earth chloride solution obtained by treating monazite or mixed rare earth ore by extraction method is extracted by P2O4- kerosene -HCl-RCl system. First, neodymium and samarium are grouped, and samarium and rare heavy earth are extracted into the organic phase. Then, medium and rare heavy earth are stripped by 20mo1/L HCl, and then the rare heavy earth is stripped by 5.0 mol/L HCl. The samarium and gadolinium concentrate obtained by grouping were reduced by zinc powder, europium was extracted by alkalinity method, and samarium and gadolinium were separated by mixed rare earth grouping method. Dissolving, precipitating with oxalic acid, separating, drying, and burning to obtain samarium oxide.
2. The rare earth chloride solution obtained by treating monazite or mixed rare earth ore is extracted and reduced by zinc powder; europium is extracted by alkalinity method; samarium and gadolinium are separated by mixed rare earth grouping method, dissolved, precipitated by oxalic acid, separated and burned.
3. Solvent extraction method
Firstly, the rare earth chloride solution obtained by treating monazite or mixed light rare earth ore is divided into Nd and Sm groups with a kerosene solution of di (2- ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (P204) as an extractant. The medium rare earth samarium gadolinium concentrate obtained by grouping consists of 30% of Sm2O3, 15% of Gd2O3, and 30% of Nd2O3. A solution containing 60g/L Re2O3 and HCl with an acidity of 0.1mol/L HCl was prepared as feed liquid. P204 kerosene solution was used as an extractant, and HCl was used as a backwash solution. Concentrating the stripping solution, neutralizing with ammonia water, precipitating with oxalic acid, filtering and separating, and burning to obtain samarium oxide.

Samarium oxide can catalyze the dehydration and dehydrogenation of primary and secondary alcohols.
