What is titanium diboride?
Titanium diboride powder is grey or greyish black with a hexagonal (AlB2) crystal structure. Its melting point is 2980 ℃, with high hardness. The oxidation resistance temperature of titanium diboride in the air can reach 1000 ℃, and it is stable in HCl and HF acids. Titanium diboride is mainly used to prepare composite ceramic products. Due to its resistance to molten metal corrosion, it can be used to manufacture molten metal crucibles and electrolytic cell electrodes.
 
Uses of titanium diboride
Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have emerged as potentially harmful electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which are thin sheet structures with a thickness of only a few nanometers. These nanosheets have a high aspect ratio and a high density of active sites, making rapid charging and superior cycling performance possible. In particular, two-dimensional nanomaterials based on transition metal diborides (TMD) have attracted researchers' interest. Because transition metal diborides have a honeycomb-like plane composed of boron and multivalent transition metal atoms, they have a high rate and long cycle stability for storing lithium ions.
 
Applicability of two-dimensional TiB2 nanosheets as candidate materials for fast charging and long-life lithium-ion batteries. They also emphasized the advantages of nanoscale bulk materials, such as TiB2, in obtaining promising performance, including pseudocapacitive charge storage, high-speed performance, and superior circularity.
 
Application fields of titanium diboride
1. Conductive ceramic materials. It is one of the primary raw materials for vacuum coating conductive evaporation boats;
2. Ceramic cutting tools and moulds. Can manufacture precision machining tools, wire drawing moulds, extrusion moulds, sandblasting nozzles, sealing components, etc.;
3. Composite ceramic materials. It can be used as an essential component of multiple composite materials to form composite materials with titanium carbide, titanium nitride, and silicon carbide materials and to produce various high-temperature resistant parts and functional components, such as high-temperature crucibles, engine components, etc. It is also one of the materials used to make armor protection materials;
4. Cathodic coating material for aluminium electrolytic cells. Due to the excellent wettability of titanium borate with molten aluminium, using titanium borate as a cathode coating material for aluminium reduction cells can reduce the power consumption of aluminium reduction cells and prolong the cell life;
5. Made into PTC heating ceramic and flexible PTC materials, it is characterized by power saving, reliability, and ease of processing and moulding. It is an updated high-tech product with various types of heating materials.
