What is silicon carbide used in?
Silicon carbide or carborundum has been an important material for sandpaper, grinding wheels and cutting tools since the late 19th century. Recently, it has been used in refractory linings and heating elements of industrial furnaces, wear-resistant parts of pumps and rocket engines, and semiconductor substrates of light-emitting diodes.
In the field of art, silicon carbide is a popular abrasive in modern gems because of the durability and low cost of materials. In manufacturing, its hardness is used in grinding, honing, water jet cutting and sandblasting and other grinding processes. Silicon carbide particles are laminated onto paper to form grip bands on sandpaper and skateboards.
Silicon carbide is used as a support and shelf material for high temperature furnaces, such as firing ceramics, glass fusion or glass casting. SiC kiln frame is lighter and more durable than traditional alumina frame.
Siliconized carbon composites are used for high-performance "ceramic" brake discs because they can withstand extreme temperatures. Silicon reacts with graphite in carbon-carbon composites to form carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide (C/SiC). These brake discs are used in some road sports cars, supercars and other high-performance cars.
Silicon carbide semiconductor materials are used to manufacture power devices for high-voltage applications, such as electric vehicles (EV), power supplies, motor control circuits and inverters. Compared with traditional silicon-based power devices such as IGBT and MOSFET, SiC has many advantages, which have dominated the market for a long time because of their cost-effectiveness and simplicity of manufacturing processes.

What is SiC silicon carbide?
Silicon carbide (SiC) is a hard compound containing silicon and carbon. A semiconductor that occurs in nature in the form of an extremely rare mineral, montmorillonite, but has been produced in large quantities in powder and crystal form since 1893 and used as an abrasive. Silicon carbide particles can be sintered together to form very hard ceramics that are widely used in applications that require high durability, such as automotive brakes, automotive clutches and ceramic plates in the bulletproof back. Large silicon carbide single crystals can be grown by the Lely method, and they can be cut into gems called synthetic mozulite.
Before the invention of boron carbide in 1929, silicon carbide was the hardest synthetic material known. It has a Morse hardness of 9, close to diamonds. In addition to hardness, silicon carbide crystals also have fracture properties, which makes them useful in grinding wheels as well as in sandpaper and cloth products. Its high thermal conductivity, coupled with its high-temperature strength, low thermal expansion and chemical resistance, make silicon carbide valuable in the manufacture of high-temperature bricks and other refractories. It is also classified as a semiconductor with electrical conductivity between metal and insulating materials. The combination of this property and its thermal properties makes SiC a promising substitute for traditional semiconductors such as silicon in high temperature applications.

Is silicon carbide harder than steel?
The hardness of silicon carbide ceramics is more than four times that of stainless steel.

Is silicon carbide stronger than diamond?
The Mohs hardness of silicon carbide is 9.5, second only to the hardest diamond in the world.

Is silicon carbide a metal?
Silicon carbide (SiC) is not a metal, it is a hard covalent bonding material. Silicon carbide compounds consist of a silicon (Si) atom and four carbon (C) atoms, which are connected by covalent bonds. Silicon carbide is also a kind of non-oxide ceramic engineering material.
