The team applied a small current to the tungsten telluride thin-layer structure, causing its odd layers to shift steadily relative to even ones, and used an arrangement of odd and even layers to store binary data. After the data is written, they read it without interfering with the permutations through a quantum property called Bailey curvature. It is known that two-dimensional monolayer tungsten ditelluride is the first two-dimensional material known to have "ferroelectric flip" phenomenon and is also the first "topological insulator" discovered.


Comparison of Data Storage Systems for Tungsten Telluride and Silicon

Compared with existing silicon-based data storage systems, the new system can fill a very small amount of physical space with more data, and the energy required to move layers is minimal, the researchers said.
