What is Nitinol?

Nitinol is a shape memory alloy, which is a special alloy that can automatically restore its plastic deformation to its original shape at a specific temperature. Its expansion rate is over 20%, its fatigue life is up to 1*10 to the 7th power, its damping characteristics are ten times higher than that of ordinary springs, and its corrosion resistance is better than the best medical stainless steel at present so that it can meet various engineering. It is an excellent functional material for medical application requirements.

In addition to its unique shape memory function, memory alloy also has excellent wear resistance, corrosion resistance, high damping and superelasticity.

Phase transformation and properties of Nitinol

As the name suggests, nickel-titanium alloy is a binary alloy composed of nickel and titanium. Due to changes in temperature and mechanical pressure, there are two different crystal structure phases: the austenite and martensite phases. The phase transformation sequence of nickel-titanium alloy cooling is the parent phase (austenite phase)-R phase-martensite phase. The R phase is rhombohedral. The austenite is at a higher temperature (more significant than the same: the temperature at which the austenite starts), or when the load is removed (external force is removed from Deactivation), and it is cubic and hard. The shape is relatively stable. The martensite phase is when the temperature is relatively low (less than Mf: the temperature at which the martensite ends) or loaded (activated by an external force). It is hexagonal, ductile, repeatable, not stable, and easy Deformed.
The application of Nitinol:

Clinical application of Nitinol wire:

1. It is used for the early alignment and levelling of the patient's dentition. Due to the superelasticity and shape memory properties of Nitinol archwires and the lower stress-strain curve, Nitinol archwires are routinely included in the treatment system as the initial stage in clinical practice. In this way, the patient's discomfort will be significantly reduced. As there are several different straight wire arch correction techniques, the MBT technology recommends using 0.016-inch heat-activated nickel-titanium alloy archwire (HANT wire), and the DEMON self-locking bracket technology recommends using copper-containing heat-activated nickel-titanium produced by Omro. Alloy archwire (phase transition temperature is about 40 degrees), O-PAK correction technology recommends using 0.016-inch super-elastic Nitinol archwire for early alignment and levelling.

2. Nitinol springs: Nitinol push springs and extension springs are springs used for orthodontics. They are super elastic and are suitable for orthodontic treatment to open up the gap between teeth and pull teeth in different directions. The nickel-titanium coil spring can generate a force of about 50g when extended by 1mm. Nickel-titanium coil springs have high elastic properties and can produce a softer and stable continuous pressure under tension. The force's attenuation is minimal, making the ideal orthodontic force required for clinically moving teeth. Meet the physiological requirements. Nitinol wire tension springs have high elasticity and meagre permanent deformation rate. Compared with stainless steel wires of the same diameter, the released correction force is 3.5-4 times different. Therefore, in orthodontic treatment, the patient has dull pain and feels soft and lasting. The follow-up time is reduced, the treatment course is shortened, and the curative effect is improved. It is a new excellent mechanical device in orthodontic treatment.

Due to the excellent characteristics of Nitinol in electrical, thermal and mechanical properties, it is widely used in the field of semiconductor electronic packaging.
