What is Bismuth Oxide Powder?
Bi2O3 bismuth oxide powder is one of the most important bismuth compounds. It has excellent dielectric properties, high oxygen fluidity, large energy gap, high refractive index, significant photoconductivity and photoluminescence, and is an advanced Functional materials;
The pure product of bismuth trioxide has α type and β type. The α type is yellow monoclinic crystal with a relative density of 8.9 and a melting point of 825°C. Soluble in acid, insoluble in water and alkali. β type is bright yellow to orange, cubic crystal system, relative density 8.55, melting point 860°C,soluble in acid but insoluble in water. Easily reduced to metallic bismuth by hydrogen, hydrocarbons, etc.
The main features of Bismuth Oxide Powder
Bismuth oxide is an important additive in electronic ceramic powder materials, purity is generally required to be above 99.15%, the main application objects are zinc oxide varistor, ceramic capacitor, ferrite magnetic materials in three categories.
Atmospheric carbon dioxide or water-soluble carbon dioxide reacts easily with Bi2O3 to form bismuth subcarbonate. Bismuth oxide is considered to be an alkaline oxide, which explains its high reactivity with carbon dioxide. However, when an acidic cation such as Si(IV) is introduced into the bismuth oxide structure, the reaction with carbon dioxide does not occur. Bismuth (III) oxide reacts with a concentrated mixture of sodium hydroxide and bromine or with a mixture of potassium hydroxide and bromine to form sodium bismuth or potassium bismuth, respectively.

Production Methods

  1. Chemical Precipitation Method: This common approach involves dissolving metallic bismuth to form a bismuth salt solution, followed by adding a precipitant and dispersing or complexing agents. The resulting precipitate is filtered, washed, and calcined to produce Bi₂O₃ powder. This method is valued for its simple process, ease of control and operation, suitability for large-scale industrial production, and relatively low environmental impact.
  2. Spray Combustion Method: This technique involves melting metal and overheating it beyond its melting point to create an aerosol, which is then combusted with pure oxygen under high pressure. This results in an intense oxidation reaction, producing high-purity nano metal oxide powder. A key advantage of this method is its short process flow, yielding powder with small, uniform particle size and high purity.
  3. Low-Temperature Oxidation: This method involves the oxidation of nanoscale bismuth powder at temperatures below 873.15 K (600 °C). The process follows a shrinking core model, where the reaction kinetics are initially controlled by the chemical reaction and later by oxygen diffusion through the formed solid Bi₂O₃ layer.
  4. Flame Spray Synthesis (FASP): Homogeneous Bi₂O₃ nanopowders can be produced from aqueous bismuth nitrate solutions using flame-assisted spray pyrolysis with acetylene (C₂H₂) or hydrogen (H₂) as fuel. High fuel flow rates ensure long residence times at high temperatures, facilitating complete precursor conversion and nanoparticle formation via the gas-to-particle route.

Key Advantages

  1. Functional Properties: Bismuth oxide exhibits several unique physical properties, including excellent dielectric permittivity, high oxygen ion mobility and conductivity (especially the δ-phase with its cubic fluorite structure), a large band gap, high refractive index, and significant photoconductivity and photoluminescence.
  2. Broad Applicability: Owing to its advantageous properties, bismuth oxide powder is widely used in electronic ceramics (like varistors and ceramic capacitors), pigments, coatings, special glasses (for coloring and high-refractive-index glass), semiconductor materials, and as a component in bismuth-based oxide superconductors.
  3. Material Flexibility: It can be produced in various purity levels (e.g., ≥99.99%, with high-performance applications requiring 99.999%), different particle sizes (from nanometers to micrometers), and morphologies (irregular, spherical, needle-shaped), and in crystal phases like α (monoclinic) and β (tetragonal) to suit specific application needs.
