What is titanium carbide?
Titanium carbide is an iron-gray crystal with a metallic luster belonging to NaCl-type simple cubic structure, with a lattice constant of 0.4329 nm and a space group of Fm3m. Carbon atoms are equivalent to titanium atoms in the lattice position, and solid covalent bonds bond TiC atoms. Tic has some characteristics similar to metals, such as high melting point, boiling point, and hardness, the hardness is second only to diamond, and it has good thermal and electrical conductivity, even showing superconductivity at shallow temperatures.

The applications of titanium carbide
Nano-titanium carbide is used in aerospace parts. It has a melting point above 3000, good high-temperature strength, compatibility with tungsten, similar thermal expansion coefficient, and much lower density than tungsten.

Titanium carbide is widely used in manufacturing wear-resistant materials, cutting tools, molds, melting metal crucibles, and many other fields. Transparent titanium carbide ceramics are also suitable optical materials. And titanium carbide abrasive in the abrasive and abrasive industry is an ideal material to replace traditional abrasive materials such as alumina, silicon carbide, boron carbide, and chromium oxide. The grinding ability of nano titanium carbide is comparable to that of synthetic diamonds, which greatly reduces the cost. It has been widely used in the United States, Japan, Russia, and other countries. Products such as abrasive, grinding wheels, and grinding paste made of nano titanium carbide can significantly improve grinding efficiency, accuracy, and surface smoothness.

Nano-titanium carbide foam ceramic: As a filter, foam ceramic can effectively remove inclusions in various fluids, and its filtering mechanism is agitation and adsorption. The chemical stability of filter materials is required, especially the filters used in the metallurgical industry need a high melting point, so most of these materials are oxides and to adapt to the filtration of molten metal, the improvement of thermal shock resistance is mainly pursued. Nano-titanium carbide foam ceramics have higher strength, hardness, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, heat resistance, and corrosion resistance than oxide foam ceramics.

Chemical properties of Titanium carbide
TiC is light gray, cubic, insoluble in water, and has high chemical stability. It hardly reacts with hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid, but it can be dissolved in aqua regia, nitric acid, hydrofluoric acid, and alkaline oxide solution.

How is titanium carbide made?
Taking titanium dioxide and carbon black as raw materials, high-purity titanium dioxide and carbon black are thoroughly mixed in proportion, the dry powder mixture is pressed and shaped, and then reduced in a horizontal carbon tube furnace or a vertical carbon tube furnace at 1900-2300 in a hydrogen atmosphere to obtain massive TiC, and then pulverized to get titanium carbide powder products. Or taking sponge titanium and carbon black as raw materials, thoroughly mixing sponge titanium (or titanium scrap recovered from titanium alloy and carbide solid solution) and carbon black in proportion, and heating to 1500-1700 in high-purity hydrogen gas stream for reaction to obtain titanium carbide.
