What is hafnium diboride powder?
Hafnium diboride is a kind of ultra-high temperature ceramic composed of hafnium and boron. It is an unusual ceramic with relatively high heat conduction and electrical conductivity. It's a gray, metallic material. Hafnium diboride has a hexagonal crystal structure with a molar mass of 200.11 g/mol and a density of 10.5 g/cc.It melts at about 3,250 degrees Celsius. The oxidation resistance of hafnium diboride is related to temperature and pressure. At 1500°C and 1atm pressure, having forms a protective oxide scale. When the temperature rises above 1600°C and the pressure drops below 1atm, the antioxidant activity of HfB2 decreases significantly. Under these conditions, the boiling temperature of B2O3 (one of the oxidation products of HfB2) exceeds the boiling point of B2O3, forming a protective oxide layer.

Hafnium diboride powder typical applications
Due to its strength and thermal properties, the material has the potential to be used in ultra-high-speed reentry aircraft, such as an INTERCONTINENTAL ballistic missile heat shield or a pneumatic front. Unlike polymers and composites, HfB2 forms an aerodynamic shape and does not ablate on re-entry.
Hafnium diboride is also being studied as a possible new material for nuclear reactor control rods.
It is also being studied as a diffusion barrier for microchips. If synthesized correctly, the barrier can be less than 7 nanometers thick.

Hafnium diboride powder characteristics:
Hafnium diboride is a kind of ultra-high temperature ceramic composed of hafnium and boron. It melts at about 3,250 degrees Celsius. It is an unusual ceramic with relatively high heat conduction and electrical conductivity and has the same properties as titanium and zirconium diboride. It's a gray, metallic material. Hafnium diboride has a hexagonal crystal structure with a molar mass of 200.11 g/mol and a density of 10.5 g/cc.
How is hafnium diboride powder produced?
The combustion synthesis method of high purity hafnium diboride powder is realized according to the following steps:
1. Mix base ingredients and thinner. Basic raw materials include hafnium dioxide, boron anhydride, and magnesium powder.Its weight percentage is: hafnium dioxide :30% ~ 60%, boron anhydride :10% ~ 40%, magnesium powder :15%~50%, adding diluent hafnium diboride weight for the basic raw material 0~3 times;
2. Dry and mix;
3. Put the evenly mixed raw material powder into the graphite boat and put it into a closed pressure vessel. The closed pressure vessel is cooled with circulating water and the reaction is carried out under 0-5mpa pressure or vacuum in a protective atmosphere. Raw materials are converted into products by self-propagating combustion;
4. Take out the product after cooling. The product is a mixture of hafnium diboride and magnesium oxide. Magnesium oxide is removed by pickling, and then hafnium diboride is washed with water and filtered and dried to obtain hafnium diboride powder.
