What is Zinc Sulfide?
Zinc sulfide is white to off-white or light yellow powder. Zinc sulfide becomes darker when exposed to light. Zinc sulfide is stable in dry air. When it is left in humid air for a long time or contains moisture, it will gradually oxidize to zinc sulfate. Zinc sulfide is soluble in dilute inorganic acid, soluble in alkali, but insoluble in water. Its relative density is 3.98 (α type), (d25) 4.102 (β type).

Its beta variant is a colorless cubic crystal with a density of 4.102g/cm3, which is transformed into an alpha type at 1020°C. Zinc sulfide exists in sphalerite. Insoluble in water, soluble in acid. Zinc sulfide is converted into zinc sulfate in humid air for a long time. It is generally derived from the action of hydrogen sulfide and zinc salt solution. How to prepare zinc sulfide?
Method 1: Add ammonium sulfide to the zinc salt solution to obtain a white precipitate of zinc sulfide, which is then refined by recrystallization.
Method 2: Add ammonium acetate to the zinc sulfate solution, and pass in hydrogen sulfide when the pH is 2 to 3 to produce precipitation. The precipitate is filtered and dried under air isolation, and a good white crystalline zinc sulfide can be obtained.
Why does zinc sulfide glow?
The color additive luminescent zinc sulfide is zinc sulfide containing a copper activator. Following excitation by daylight or a suitable artificial light, luminescent zinc sulfide produces a yellow-green phosphorescence with a maximum of 530 nanometers.
