What is Boron Nitride?
Boron nitride is a heat-resistant and chemical-resistant refractory compound of boron and nitrogen, with the chemical formula BN.

What is the chemical feature of Boron Nitride?
The empirical formula for boron nitride (BN) is deceptive. BN is completely different from other diatomic molecules such as carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen chloride (HCl). On the contrary, it has a lot in common with carbon, and the representation of carbon as a single atom C is also misleading.

Is Boron Nitride (BN) Hard?
BN, like carbon, has a variety of structural forms. The most stable structure of BN, hBN has the same hexagonal structure as graphite and has the similar softness and lubricating properties. hBN can also be produced in graphene-like sheets that can form nanotubes.

In contrast, cubic boron nitride (cBN) is electronically similar to diamond. It is not that hard, but it is more stable thermally and chemically. It is also easier to make. Unlike diamond, it is insoluble in metal at high temperatures, making it a useful wear-resistant and oxidation-resistant metal coating. There is also an amorphous form (aBN), which is equivalent to amorphous carbon (see below).

BN is primarily a synthetic material, although there are reports of naturally occurring deposits. Attempts to make pure BN can be traced back to the early 20th century, but commercially acceptable forms have only been produced in the past 70 years. In the 1958 patent of Carborundum Company (Lewiston, New York), the scientist has prepared BN by heating boric acid (H3BO3) and metal salts of oxyacids (such as phosphate) in the presence of ammonia to form BN. The molded shape. "Mix", and then compress it into shape.

Today, similar methods are being used, starting with diboron trioxide (B2O3) or H3BO3, and using ammonia or urea as the nitrogen source. All synthesis methods produce somewhat impure aBN, which is purified and converted into hBN by heating at a temperature higher than the temperature used in the synthesis. Similarly, for the preparation of synthetic diamond, hBN is converted to cBN under high pressure and high temperature.

Applications of Boron Nitride
Boron Nitride is an important industrial chemical that can be used widely in modern industries.
Lubricant
Hexagonal boron nitride is used as a lubricant for paint, cosmetics, pencil lead, and dental cement. Even in the absence of gas or water molecules in the compound layer, its lubricating properties can play a role, making it a good component of the vacuum system.

Compared with graphite, BN has significantly better chemical stability and conductivity.

Equipment under high-temperature environment
Its excellent heat resistance makes this compound suitable for a variety of applications involving extremely high temperatures. Hexagonal boron nitride is used to improve the lubricating properties of rubber, plastics, alloys, and ceramics.

In the case of plastics, the inclusion of BN components can provide lower thermal expansion. It can also be integrated into semiconductor substrates and microwave oven windows.

Boron nitride is an effective ingredient in reaction vessels and crucibles due to its thermochemical properties.

Semiconductor Industry
The bandgap of boron nitride ranges from 4.5 to 6.4 eV, making it an excellent wide-bandgap semiconductor material. Its inherent thermal and dielectric properties make it a suitable substrate for the development of metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFET) and semiconductors.

Grinding and cutting tools
Due to the physical properties of cubic boron nitride, this polymorph is used as an abrasive for nickel, iron, and selected alloys under conditions that are not suitable for diamond (for example, at extremely high temperatures). Its cubic boron nitride form is used in cutting tools and grinding equipment.

Price of Boron Nitride
