Overview of lithium nitride
Lithium nitride is a kind of metal nitrogen compound, which is a purple or red crystalline solid. The lithium nitride chemical formula is Li3N. And it shows a light green luster under reflected light and a ruby color in transmitted light. Long-term exposure to the air will eventually become lithium carbonate. The chemistry of basic metal nitrides is extremely limited. Among the binary compounds, only lithium nitride is stable and easy to prepare.

At room temperature, metal lithium can partially generate lithium nitride when exposed to the air. Lithium generates lithium nitride in a nitrogen stream, which is 10-15 times faster than in the air. At this time, all lithium is converted into lithium nitride. Compared with this property, it is difficult for other alkali metals to form nitrides. For example, sodium nitrite can only be prepared by deposition on sapphire with the atomic beam at low temperature, and it will decompose after a little heating.

Lithium nitride with water, Is Li3N soluble?

Lithium nitride reacts easily with water to form lithium hydroxide and ammonia gas, especially fine powdered lithium nitride, which can burn violently when heated in the air. Therefore, lithium nitride must be handled in an inert atmosphere (such as nitrogen).

Lithium nitride appears as a reddish-brown powder. Insoluble in most organic solvents. Used in metallurgy and chemical synthesis. Lithium nitride is a lithium salt and a nitride.

What is lithium nitride made of?
It is made by reacting lithium with nitrogen. This is unusual because almost no other elements react with nitrogen at room temperature like lithium. It can also be made by reacting nitrogen with lithium dissolved in sodium.

Does lithium nitride burn in the air?
Lithium is unique in the Group because it also reacts with the nitrogen in the air to form lithium nitride. Lithium burns with a strongly red-tinged flame if heated in the air. For the record, it also reacts with the nitrogen in the air to give lithium nitride.

Is Li3N ionic or covalent?
Lithium nitride is the only known thermodynamically stable alkali metal nitride and is one of the most ionic of all known nitrides. At ambient pressure, the nitrogen exists in an anomalous multiply charged (N3−) state which is stable only because of its crystal environment - a hexagonal bipyramid of Li+ ions.

What is lithium nitride used for?
Lithium Nitride is a brownish-red, lump-shaped solid or a sand-like powder. It is used as a reducing agent. Lithium Nitride is on the Hazardous Substance List because it is cited by DOT.  This chemical is on the Special Health Hazard Substance List because it is FLAMMABLE and REACTIVE.

As a fast ion conductor material, it should have higher decomposition voltage, lower electronic conductivity, higher ion conductivity and better chemical stability. Many lithium fast-ion conductors have the above-mentioned characteristics, which can be used to make all-solid-state batteries with superior performance, which are used as power sources for calculators, camera flashes, electronic watches, and an increasing number of electronic devices and electronic products; in addition, lithium-ion conductors It can also be used to make special ion devices.

In addition to being used as a solid electrolyte, lithium nitride is also an effective catalyst for the conversion of hexagonal boron nitride to cubic boron nitride.

Lithium nitride (Li3N) is used as an n-type dopant to be incorporated into the electron transport material tris (8-hydroxy quinoline) aluminum (Alq3) layer to improve the performance of OLED devices. There have been reports in the literature that Li3N is used as the electron injection layer and cathode The buffer layer between can improve the performance of the device.

What else do we not know about lithium?
Scientists Say Lithium Should Be Added to Drinking Water to Prevent Suicides

A new study published in the 'British Journal of Psychiatry' finds a link between lithium in drinking water and lower suicide levels.

Adding Lithium to the Water Supply Could Prevent Suicides, Say, Scientists. Maybe they had the right idea putting lithium in 7 Up when it was first sold in 1929.

Because, in an era of rising suicide rates especially among young people, a new study from Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) published in the British Journal of Psychiatry has found a strong link between geographical areas with high levels of lithium in public drinking water and lower suicide rates.

In a press release from BSMS, the study's lead author Professor Anjum Memon said: "It is promising that higher levels of trace lithium in drinking water may exert an anti-suicidal effect and have the potential to improve community mental health."

Part-funded by King's College London, the study is a meta-analysis of three decades of research in Austria, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, the UK, Japan and the USA.

Coronavirus Could Have a Devastating Lasting Impact On Mental. It concludes that lithium's "protective" abilities could be further tested by "randomized community trials of lithium supplementation of the water supply" in communities with a high prevalence of mental health conditions and risk of suicide.

The report states: "These findings, which are consistent with the finding in clinical trials that lithium reduces suicide and related behaviors in people with a mood disorder, suggest that naturally occurring lithium in drinking water may have the potential to reduce the risk of suicide and may possibly help in mood stabilization, particularly in populations with relatively high suicide rates and geographical areas with a greater range of lithium concentration in the drinking water."

Before it became an approved medicine, in the early twentieth century, lithium drinks, including 7 Up (which removed the lithium in 1949), lithium beer, Lithia water - from an ancient Native American sacred medicinal spring in Georgia - were promoted as calming tonics. Due to its electro-conductive properties, lithium has since been used as a component in batteries and cellphones. Now it is available as a mood-balancing supplement available in online health shops in the form of lithium orotate, although its effectiveness in this form is not proven.

The study noted that, via their drinking water, people were getting a low but constant dose of lithium, potentially since birth. Yet the optimal blood level at which lithium exerts a possible preventive effect against suicide is yet to be confirmed. Nor had the potential effect of trace doses of lithium in the human body.

During one small randomized controlled trial, micro-doses of lithium (400 micrograms daily) taken by former drug users showed an improvement in mood when compared with a placebo, suggesting that doses of lithium far lower than those used in psychiatry could have the potential to influence mood and possibly reduce suicide risk.

However, drinking water is just one way we consume lithium. Even in areas with high concentrations of lithium in drinking water such as some parts of Texas (340 micrograms daily) - where research found it reduced cocaine and heroin arrests and suicidal and violent criminal behavior - the amount of lithium ingested via the public water supply is far less than via food and mineral water.
