The aluminum-silicon alloy forms a binary eutectic in 11.7% of silicon with a melting point of 577°C. The two phases are silicon solid solutions in aluminum, with a maximum solid solution of 0.8% at room temperature, and aluminum solid solutions in silicon. There are no intermetallic compounds. Sodium can be added in small amounts to improve the eutectic and increase the strength by improving the hardening of the dispersion. Even small amounts of iron can severely reduce toughness, although manganese can be added to reduce this effect.
