Titanium Silicon Carbide Powder Properties
About Titanium Silicon Carbide Ti3SiC2 Powder:

Titanium carbide with the chemical formula Ti3SiC2 is a material with metal and ceramic properties. It is one of the MAX phases.

Titanium silicon carbide (Ti3SiC2) is a new type of ternary layered ceramic material that combines the properties of metal and ceramic. It not only has the excellent performance of ceramics but also has high yield strength, high melting point, high thermal stability, high-temperature strength, and metal properties. It has high thermal and electrical conductivity at room temperature and can be used like metal. High-speed steel cutting tools are machined and have strong and good oxidation resistance, thermal shock resistance, and corrosion resistance at high temperatures. Good plasticity, friction coefficient, and better self-lubricating performance than graphite carbonization.

Titanium silicon carbide is a unique ceramic because of its ceramic and metallic properties, which means it is suitable for both mechanical and electrical applications. For example, it exhibits high-temperature stability, high electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity and has moderate oxidation resistance. In addition, it has a high elongation at break at high temperatures and can be processed with hardened steel tools.

Titanium silicon carbide (Ti3SiC2) is a novel material attractive to materials scientists and physicists alike. The remarkable properties of this material include:

  • High melting point.
  • High strength and modulus.
  • High thermal and electrical conductivity.
  • Excellent high-temperature oxidation resistance.
  • Machinability by electric discharge methods and conventional cutting tools.

Titanium silicon carbide (Ti3SiC2) is a promising ceramic material, but it is widely used to combine the advantages of metals and ceramics. Titanium silicon carbide (Ti3SiC2) has a high melting point of 3200°C, a low density of 4.53 g/cm3, Young's modulus of 320 GPa, a Vickers hardness of 4 GPa, and high strength and flexibility at high temperatures. Ti3SiC2 is also thermally and electrically conductive. Ti3SiC2 can be used as a structural ceramic and is attractive in commutation brushes due to its high thermal conductivity. Product Performance of Titanium Silicon Carbide Ti3SiC2 Powder :

Titanium silicon carbide Ti3SiC2 powder has high strength and elastic modulus, high thermal and electrical conductivity, and good workability.

How is Titanium Silicon Carbide Ti3SiC2 Powder produced?

In a vacuum, a method of reducing titanium dioxide with a mixture of silicon carbide and silicon powder at 1550°C. Ti3SiC2 is synthesized from a starting powder mixture that does not contain pure titanium. Pure titanium in the powder is problematic because it has oxidizing properties and is explosive in finely divided powders.

The solid-phase reaction synthesizes titanium silicon carbide. There is a small amount of Tic in the reaction product. It isn't easy to synthesize pure titanium silicon carbide in one step through a solid-phase reaction with TiSi and graphite. Pure titanium silicon carbide is obtained through multi-step treatment. The process is as follows:

In the first step, TiSi and graphite are mixed and pressed into a test piece at a molar ratio of 0.420.290.29. The test piece is placed in an evacuated silicon test tube and treated at 1100°C for ten h to obtain a mixture of TSiC2, TiC, and TiSiC;

The second step is to remove TiSi2 with hydrofluoric acid, namely:

  TiS+12(HF)一(TiF)+2SF+6H2

The third step is to oxidize TiC to TiO2 in the air at 450℃ for ten h and then dissolve the TiO2 with (NH)SO and HSO at 100℃. The obtained solid phase product is pure titanium silicon carbide (TisSiC2) powder.

The powder synthesized by the above method must be sintered at a high temperature to prepare a bulk material.

Applications of Titanium Silicon Carbide Ti3SiC2 Powder:

Ti3SiC2 powder is used as MAX special ceramic materials, electronic materials, high-temperature structural materials, electrode brush materials, chemical anti-corrosion materials, and high-temperature heating materials.
Titanium silicon carbide has many advantages over both metal and ceramics. Like metal, it is a good conductor of electricity and heat. It is easy to process, soft, insensitive to thermal shock, and exhibits plasticity at high temperatures. It is also resistant to oxidation and high temperature, like ceramics. The high-temperature strength exceeds all high-temperature alloys.

As a high-temperature material, titanium silicon carbide has an electrical conductivity twice that of graphite. It is wear-resistant and has obvious advantages as a brush for transitional AC motors. Its high-temperature strength, oxidation, and thermal shock resistance can reach SiN. It is possible that metal smelted electrode materials can be used due to their good thermal shock resistance and high electrical conductivity. In summary, titanium silicon carbide is a high-temperature material with important research value and application prospects.

Storage Condition of Titanium Silicon Carbide Ti3SiC2 Powder :
Damp reunion will affect Ti3SiC2 powder dispersion performance and using effects, therefore, titanium silicon carbide Ti3SiC2 powder should be sealed in vacuum packing and stored in cool and dry room, the titanium silicon carbide can not be exposure to air. In addition, the Ti3SiC2 powder should be avoided under stress.
