What is titanium carbide?
Chemical formula: titanium carbide, molecular weight: 59.89. Grey metallic face-centred cubic lattice solid. Melting point: 3140 ± 90 , boiling point: 4820 , relative density: 4.93. Hardness: greater than 9. Insoluble in water, soluble in nitric acid and aqua regia. Stable to air at lower than 800 , eroded by air at higher than 2000 , and capable of reacting with pure O2 at 1150C. Preparation method: the mixture of titanium powder and carbon obtained by the reduction of TiO2 by hydrogen is acted at high temperature, or TiO2 and carbon powder are mixed and pressed into blocks. It is then heated to 2300-2700 in an electric furnace and carbonized in H2 or CO atmosphere. Use: to make cemented carbide, also used as an electrode and abrasive for arc lamps.
Synthetic methods of titanium carbide
1. Take titanium dioxide and carbon black as raw materials, fully mix high-purity titanium dioxide and carbon black in proportion, form the dry powder mixture under pressure, use a horizontal carbon tube furnace or a vertical carbon tube furnace, and reduce it under hydrogen atmosphere at 1900~2300 to obtain blocky TiC, and then grind it into titanium carbide powder products. Or take sponge titanium and carbon black as raw materials, and fully mix sponge titanium (or titanium alloy, titanium scraps recovered from solid carbide solution) and carbon black in proportion; Titanium carbide is prepared by heating to 1500~1700 in a high purity hydrogen gas stream
2. Direct carbonization of titanium
Mix titanium powder (reduced by sodium or decomposed by titanium hydride, below 325 meshes) with carbon black, and shape it under a pressure of about 0.98Pa. Then put the material into a graphite container, and heat it to 1500~1700 in the air stream of high-purity hydrogen to make carbon infiltrate. The reaction temperature and holding time depend on the material's type, particle size and reaction performance.
 
Use of titanium carbide
1. It is used as an additive for cutting tool materials, a melting crucible for bismuth, zinc and cadmium, a semiconductor wear-resistant film preparation, and an HDD large-capacity memory device
2. It is an important component of cemented carbide. It is used as a deoxidizer in the steelmaking industry
3. It is used as a metal-ceramic with high hardness, corrosion resistance and good thermal stability.
