What is magnesium stearate?

Synthesis of magnesium stearate
1. Preparation of sodium stearate: dissolve 4.25 parts of sodium hydroxide in 50 parts of water, and raise the temperature to 85 for standby. Put 25 parts of stearic acid into the reaction kettle, heat 500 parts of water, stir and dissolve, and adjust the temperature to 85~90 . Slowly add the prepared sodium hydroxide solution into the stearic acid aqueous solution under stirring, maintain the temperature to 75~80 , and stir the reaction to the endpoint. 2. Neutralize 46.6g of stearic acid with 164mL of 1mol/L sodium hydroxide solution to obtain 50g of sodium stearate in 2L water. Heat the prepared sodium stearate solution to 80 . Add the solution prepared by dissolving 20g of magnesium chloride in 100 mL water by dropping. After continuous stirring, the white residue will be precipitated quickly. After cooling, filter it out, wash it with water until there is no chloride ion, and wash it with ethanol. Place 10g of product in a vacuum dryer with concentrated sulfuric acid for four weeks. The product Mg (C18H35O2) 2 · 2H2O is obtained. The remaining product is dissolved in benzene and heated under reflux for 20min. The yellow liquid layer in the upper layer is poured out while hot and evaporated to dryness. The solid obtained can be recrystallized with benzene to obtain the product Mg (C18H35O2) 2.
