What is Aluminum Boride?
Aluminum diboride heating loses its surface luster and is stable in cold dilute acid. Hot hydrochloric acid and nitric acid decomposed by mixing a fine powder of aluminum and boron after the heating reaction. Structurally, the B atoms form graphitic sheets with Al atoms between them, which is very similar to the structure of magnesium diboride. The single crystal of AlB 2 exhibits metallic conductivity on an axis parallel to the basement hexagonal plane. Aluminum diboride is considered to be a harmful substance because it reacts with acid and hydrogen to produce toxic gases. For example, it reacts with hydrochloric acid to release borane and aluminum chloride.

Structure of aluminum diboride
The structure of aluminum diboride is similar to that of the metal compound. Its structure mainly depends on the crystal structure of aluminum metal and boron and does not depend on their valence relationship. The borides of aluminum are AlB 2, AlB 4, and AlB 12. The diboride AlB 2 can be generated from two single reactions above 600℃. It is a layered structure, with the Al atoms directly overlapping (mode A, A). The B atoms are filled in a triangular column formed by the Al atoms directly overlapping. That is, the boron layer is between the two aluminum layers. The boron layer is similar to the graphite structure, with the boron atoms associated in a hexagonal network, each B atom is 0.173nm away from the other three B atoms, and six Al atoms are connected to B, which occupy the apex of the triangular column. AlB 2 is dissolved in dilute hydrochloric acid to produce a reducing solution, which may contain HB (OH) + 3. AlB 2 is insoluble in dilute sulfuric acid but is soluble in nitric acid. The AlB 2 was resolved above 920℃ to generate AlB 12.
