What is zinc sulfide?
Zinc sulfide is an inorganic compound with a chemical formula of ZnS. It is a white or slightly yellow powder, and the color becomes darker when seen. It is stable in dry air, and when it is placed in humid air for a long time or contains moisture, it will gradually oxidize to zinc sulfate.
There are two crystal forms of zinc sulfide. Type A zinc sulfide is a colorless hexagonal crystalline powder or white to off-white or light yellow powder. The relative density is 4.087. The melting point is 1700°C. Thermal conductivity 25.1 w/(m/K), thermal expansion coefficient (volume): 100, 0.163; 200, 0.395; 400, 0.919; 800, 2.146. B-type zinc sulfide is a cubic crystal. White to off-white or yellow powder. The relative density is 4.102, and the melting point is l700°C. Coefficient of thermal expansion (volume): 100°C, 0.156; 200°C, 0.386; 400°C, 0.898; 800°C, 1.996. It can be slowly oxidized to sulfate in the air. The crystal form transition temperature is 1020°C. Soluble in dilute mineral acid. Insoluble in water.
Preparation of zinc sulfide
Double decomposition method; add zinc sulfate solution into the reactor, slowly add ammonium sulfide under stirring to carry out the metathesis reaction, produce zinc sulfide and ammonium sulfate, remove ammonium sulfate by filtration, then concentrated by evaporation, cool to crystallize, and centrifuge to obtain sulfide Zinc finished product.
The physical and chemical properties of zinc sulfide
The study of zinc sulfide fluorescent materials has a history of more than 130 years since it was discovered by the French chemist Sidot in 1868. From the 1920s to the 1940s, the study of zinc sulfide materials has always attracted people's attention.
Physical properties
White or slightly yellow powder. It turns into crystals when burning in H2S gas. The α variant is a colorless hexagonal crystal with a density of 3.98g/cm3 and a melting point of 1700°C; the β variant is a colorless cubic crystal with a density of 4.102g/cm3, which is transformed into the α type at 1020°C. Exist in sphalerite. Insoluble in water, soluble in acid. See the sunlight dimmed.
Chemical nature
It is converted into zinc sulfate in humid air for a long time. It is generally derived from the action of hydrogen sulfide and zinc salt solution. If a small amount of Cu, Mn, Ag is added as an activator in the crystalline ZnS, it can emit different colors of fluorescence after being illuminated. Used as analytical reagents, coatings, paints, white and opaque glass, filling rubber, plastics, and for preparing phosphors.

Application of zinc sulfide
Used as analytical reagents, phosphors, and photoconductor materials. It is also used in the manufacture of dyes, coatings, pigments, glass, and curing oil. Used as a coating for various filters and laser windows.
Storage and transportation of zinc sulfide and matters needing attention
Packed in barrels or woven bags lined with polyethylene bags. The net weight of each drum (bag) is 50kg or 25kg. Store in a ventilated and dry warehouse, avoid open storage. The container must be sealed to prevent moisture. It shall not be stored or transported together with edible items and feed. There should be cover during transportation. To prevent rain and sun, handle with care when loading and unloading to prevent the package from breaking. This product is corrosive. poisonous. Can irritate the skin. Operators must wear work clothes and protective equipment. The workshop should be well ventilated.
