What is Chromium Carbide?
Chromium carbide is a high melting point inorganic material with good wear resistance, corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance in high temperature environment (1000~1100℃). Because of its special high temperature performance, it is widely used as a thermal spray material for metal surface protection and an additive in the cemented carbide industry.
The main features of Chromium Carbide
Gray powder with metallic luster; Orthorhombic system; Density: 6.68g/cm3; Melting point: 1890℃; Good wear resistance, corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance in high temperature environment (1000~1100℃). Belongs to a metal ceramic. Chromium carbide has strong corrosion resistance and high-temperature oxidation properties, and its thermal properties are similar to steel. It is an excellent material for many commercial industries.

The process of producing Chromium Carbide
Metal chromium powder carbonization method: The carbon black is crushed with electrolytic chromium in the proportion of 13.5% to 64% (mass) (more than the theoretical combined carbon content of 11.33%) to form 325 mesh metal chromium powder. After dry mixing with a ball mill as a raw material. Add 1% to 3% stearic acid as a molding lubricant. Press molding with more than 1T/cChemicalbookm2 pressure. Put the press-molded powder into a graphite plate or crucible, and heat it to 1500-1700°C with a Taman furnace or an induction heating furnace in a hydrogen stream (the dew point of hydrogen is about -35°C), and keep it for 1 h to make Chromium undergoes a carbonization reaction to form chromium carbide, which is cooled to obtain chromium carbide.
The applications of Chromium Carbide
1. It can be used as an additive for cemented carbide (such as tungsten carbide-based cemented carbide grain refiner), which can be used in mining, machining, etc.
2. It can be used as a welding material additive. The welding rod made of it can be used for surfacing on the Chemicalbook working surface of some mechanical equipment (such as coal mill, ball mill, jaw plate, etc.), which can increase the service life several times.
3. A large number of thermal spray materials used for metal surface protection technology. This information is edited by Ding Hong of Chemicalbook.
4. For chromium carbide ceramics. Coarse-grained chromium carbide is used as a melt-blown material to form a melt-blown coating on the surface of metals and ceramics, giving the latter properties such as wear resistance, heat resistance, and corrosion resistance. It is widely used in aircraft engines and petrochemical mechanical devices to greatly improve mechanical life. Also used for spraying semiconductor films.
