What is Zinc Sulfide Powder?
Zinc sulfide is an inorganic compound and with the chemical formula ZnS, white or slightly yellow powder darkened by light. Zinc sulfide is stable in dry air but oxidizes to zinc sulfate when left for a long time in wet air or when it contains moisture.

The main form of zinc sulfide in nature occurs as sphalerite. Although this mineral is usually black due to various impurities, its pure form is white and is widely used as a pigment. In its dense synthetic form, zinc sulfide powder can be transparent, and it is used as a window into visible and infrared optics.

Zinc Sulfide Powder Properties
Zinc sulfide powder is stable in dry air; when left in wet air or containing moisture for a long time, it will gradually oxidize to zinc sulfate. Zinc sulfide is soluble in dilute inorganic acid and insoluble in water and alkali solution.

Zinc sulfide powder is generally obtained by the action of hydrogen sulphide and zinc salt solution. If trace amounts of Mn, Cu and Ag are added to the crystal zinc sulphide as activators, it can emit fluorescence of different colors when exposed to light. Zinc sulfide powder is used as an analytical reagent, coating, paint, white and opaque glass, rubber and plastic filling, and for the preparation of phosphor.

Zinc Sulfide Powder Uses
Chemical Industry
Zinc sulfide powder is mainly used in paints and plastics in chemical production. The production of zinc sulfide was first recorded in France in 1783, where it became an important pigment in paints due to its white opacity and insolubility in water, organic solvents, weak acids, and weak bases.

Zinc sulfide powder is now the next most important pigment in the United States, apart from titanium dioxide, but it continues to enjoy an important place in European industry. As a bulk material with a melting point of 1650°C and a purity of 98%, commercial-grade zinc sulfide has a Mohs hardness of 3.0 and a refractive index of 2.37. Because of its high refractive index and abrasion resistance, zinc sulfide pigment has a relatively high covering power when coated on a very thin layer of equipment, waxed paper, or metal plates. Zinc sulfide is easy to disperse, not easy to agglomerate, neutral white, and has good optical properties, and it is often used as a component of thermosetting plastics, thermoplastics, reinforced fiber glass, flame retardant, synthetic rubber, and dispersant.

Zinc sulfide is very soft and, therefore, minimally abrasive, and the white elastomer used as a pigment produces soles that last much longer than those made with TiO2.

Ceramic Industry
Zinc sulfide powder is used in ceramics due to its excellent sintering properties. It has been shown that the sintering properties of zinc sulfide powders with monodisperse particles are higher than those of agglomerated zinc sulfide and that the sintering properties increase with decreasing particle size.

Photovoltaic Materials
Zinc sulfide powder is a wide bandgap semiconductor with a bandgap of 3.75 eV for bulk phase material and 4.13 eV for 3 nm zinc sulfide particles, which undergoes significant blue-shifting, making it a promising photonic material. It was found by doping with other metal ions M (transition metal ions copper, silver, rare earth element ions samarium, europium, terbium, erbium, etc.) that the introduction of different dopants into the zinc sulfide nanoparticles substrate gives visible emission in different wavelength bands.

Photocatalytic Materials
Since zinc sulfide nanoparticles are a photonic material that generates photonic holes, the energy level change and widening of the energy gap brought about by the quantum size effect enhances its redox ability, making it an excellent photocatalytic semiconductor. Zinc sulfide nanoparticles are wrapped around polystyrene or silica to form a core-shell structure, and then the core is removed to make hollow spheres, which float on the surface of wastewater containing organic matter, and the degradation of organic matter can be carried out by using sunlight. This method can also be used to add zinc sulfide powder to the ceramic glaze so that it has the function of cleaning and sterilization, and it can also be added to artificial fibers made of bactericidal fibers.

Infrared properties
Zinc sulfide is an infrared optical material with high infrared transmittance in the 3-5p.m and 8-12ym bands and excellent optical, mechanical, and thermal properties, making it the best dual-band infrared viewing window and hood material for aircraft. The use of this property as a pigment-adulterated special wave-absorbing material requires a single particle with a large particle size and can be modified by using metal nanolayers encapsulated on the surface of zinc sulfide.
