What is areogel?
Aerogel is known as the lowest density solid in the world, and it is recognized as the king of the most efficient thermal insulation and thermal insulation materials in the world. 
It is lighter than cotton and has a density of at least 0.16mg per cubic centimeter, which is 1/6 of the air density and is called "frozen smoke".

What is silica aerogel? 
Silicon dioxide (SiO2) aerogel is the earliest and more mature aerogel in high temperature thermal insulation aerogel. 
Silica aerogel, known as "blue smoke", can be said to be one of the powder materials with higher appearance. 
It is a kind of gel material with gas as dispersion medium. it is a kind of light nano-porous solid material with controllable structure composed of colloidal particles coalescing with each other. it has a continuous three-dimensional network structure, its solid phase and pore structure are of the order of nanometer, the porosity can be as high as 80%-99.8%, the specific surface area can reach more than 1000m2/g, and the density is as low as 3kg/m3. 
It is the solid material with the lowest density and the best thermal insulation at present. 

Application of silica aerogel
Because of its high transparency, good thermal insulation, low density, low dielectric constant and high temperature resistance, SiO2 aerogel is widely used in many fields. 

Heat insulating material
SiO2 aerogel has a nano-porous three-dimensional network structure, high porosity (80.0% ~ 99.8%), high specific surface activity (500 ~ 1200m2/g), extremely low density (0.03 g/cm3), and low thermal conductivity [0.005 W / (g/cm3)]. Therefore, it can be widely used as a good thermal insulation material. 
Kajikawa et al used SiO2 aerogel and silicon adhesive as the thermal insulation coating of internal combustion engine, and found that it has excellent thermal insulation and mechanical strength. 

Soundproof material
SiO2 aerogel as a nano-porous material, when sound propagates in the aerogel, it will first enter its nano-pore, and the three-dimensional network structure of SiO2 aerogel will make sound waves return, collide and reflect many times in it. 
In addition, sound waves in nano-pores will produce friction with air, pore walls, etc., which will delay the propagation of sound and cause great sound damage. 
Therefore, SiO2 aerogel can be used as a good material for sound insulation and sound delay. 
Because of its unique nano-porous three-dimensional network structure and the characteristics of ultra-fine particles, high porosity, high specific surface area and low density, SiO2 aerogel has strong adsorption and can be used as an adsorbent. 
In addition, on the one hand, because of its ultra-high porosity (more than 90%), SiO2 aerogel can be used as an excellent catalyst carrier, on the other hand, because of its good catalytic performance, it also has good application value as a new catalyst or catalyst carrier. 
Wang Meilan et al synthesized amphiphilic SiO2 aerogel composite by citric acid grafted chitosan and silicic acid solution under the catalysis of silane coupling agent, which has a good application effect in wastewater treatment.
