Copper oxide (Cu2O) is a common oxide that appears as a red powder. Because of its unique physical and chemical properties, cuprous oxide has many applications.

1.Preparation

Copper oxide can be prepared through various methods, among which the most common is the chemical reaction method. This method uses copper salts and alkali as raw materials to generate cuprous oxide through precipitation reactions. The specific preparation process is as follows:

Weigh a certain amount of copper sulfate or copper chloride solution;

Add an appropriate amount of sodium hydroxide or ammonia to the solution and adjust the pH value to alkaline;

After standing for some time, a blue precipitate of copper hydroxide is generated;

Filter, wash, and dry the residue;

Heat copper hydroxide in oxygen to obtain cuprous oxide.

2. Property

Physical properties: Copper oxide is a red powder with a face-centered cubic crystal structure and a lattice constant of 0.378nm. Under standard conditions, the density is 6.0g/cm ³, The melting point is 1235 ℃, and the boiling point is 2360 ℃.

Chemical properties: Copper oxide is alkaline and can react with acids to produce corresponding copper salts and copper. When heated in the air, cuprous oxide can be oxidized to black copper oxide. In addition, cuprous oxide can also react with decreasing gases such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide to produce metallic copper.

It is an oxide of monovalent copper in the form of a bright red powder solid.

Copper oxide will dismutate into divalent copper and elemental copper in acidic solutions.

In humid air, cuprous oxide gradually oxidizes into black copper oxide.

Copper oxide is insoluble in water and alcohol but soluble in hydrochloric acid, ammonium chloride, and ammonia water, slightly soluble in nitric acid, and can also be soluble in concentrated alkali, ferric chloride, and other solutions.

Copper oxide has alkalinity and can react with acids to produce corresponding copper salts and copper.

When heated in the air, cuprous oxide is oxidized to black copper oxide.

Copper oxide can also react with reducing gases such as hydrogen and carbon monoxide to form metallic copper.

3. Application

Due to its excellent conductivity, catalytic performance, and stability, cuprous oxide has been widely used in multiple fields. The following are its main application areas:

Pigments and coatings: Copper oxide is widely used in the pigment and coating industry due to its bright red color. It can be mixed with other pigments to prepare various colors and is widely used in architecture, furniture, and automobiles.

Electroplating: Copper oxide, one of the main components of an electroplating solution, is used to prepare metallic copper coatings. Different thicknesses and qualities of copper coatings can be obtained by controlling the electroplating conditions to meet different needs.

Catalyst: Copper oxide is an effective catalyst that can be used in many organic reactions. For example, in the oxidation reaction of ethanol, using cuprous oxide as a catalyst can yield acetaldehyde. In addition, copper oxide can be used as a catalyst in hydrogenation reactions, carbon monoxide oxidation reactions, etc.

Solar cells: In recent years, the application of cuprous oxide in the field of solar cells has gradually received attention. Due to its narrow bandgap, it can absorb red and near-infrared light from sunlight, thereby achieving photoelectric conversion. By combining with other materials, high-performance solar cells can be prepared.

Other fields: In addition to the application mentioned above areas, cuprous oxide can also be used in the preparation of antibacterial materials, electrochemical sensors, magnetic materials, and other fields. With the deepening of research, its application prospects will be even broader.
