Rapid Hot Pressing Sintering of Titanium Diboride/Copper Composites

Ceramic particle dispersion reinforced copper matrix composites (CMC) have good electrical conductivity and mechanical properties, so they have good application prospects in the electrical and electronic industries. There are many preparation methods for CMC, and the preparation of high-performance composite materials using in-situ prepared metal matrix composite powders (MMPs) as raw materials have attracted much attention in recent years due to their comprehensive advantages. The researchers prepared in-situ spherical TiB2p/Cu composite powders by liquid phase in-situ reaction and used them as raw materials to prepare composite materials by rapid hot pressing sintering. Then, the sintered TiB2P/Cu composites were deformed by a combination of hot rolling and cold rolling. Finally, the effect of rolling deformation on the sintered TiB2p/Cu composites was studied and discussed from the two aspects of microstructure evolution and composite performance. The relevant results were published in the Journal of Materials Research and Technology.

Titanium diboride/copper-based composite powders were prepared by gas atomization, with an average particle size of about 33 microns. It was loaded into a graphite mold with an inner diameter of 40mm and then densified in the FHP-828 rapid hot-pressing sintering furnace. The sintering temperature was 950℃, the pressure was 40MPa, and the holding time was 20min. The obtained sample was hot rolled at 900℃ with a deformation of 30% and then cold rolled with a total deformation of 90%. The experimental process is shown in the figure below:

The samples were systematically analyzed for microstructure structure. The results showed that the nearly spherical boundary and sintering neck between the Cu matrix and TiB2p were visible in the TiB2p/Cu composite sample sintered by rapid hot pressing. This shows that rapid hot pressing can achieve the densification of composite powder in a short time. Compared with the traditional vacuum hot pressing technology, the heating rate of rapid hot pressing sintering is faster (100C/min), which can promote plastic flow and reduce grain growth. In addition, under the action of high current density between TiB2p and Cu, the grain boundary diffusion rate of the sample increases, which is also conducive to improving the relative density of the composite material. Despite this, a small amount of holes are still visible in the sintered samples, which will be eliminated in the subsequent rolling process.

The conductivity and mechanical properties of the samples were analyzed, and the results showed that the mechanical properties of the samples were greatly improved both in the sintered state and after rolling. The yield strength of the samples after cold rolling reached 567MPa, which was significantly improved. At the same time, the conductivity of the samples was also well maintained. Therefore, this process is expected to obtain a copper-based composite material with both high conductivity and high strength.
