What is Titanium Nitride?

Titanium nitride, chemical formula TiN, is a synthetic ceramic material that is extremely hard and nearly as hard as diamond. Commonly used as a coating on titanium alloys, steel, hard alloys and aluminum structures to improve surface properties. As a thin coating, titanium nitride is used to harden, protect cutting and sliding surfaces, as well as for decorative purposes, and as a non-toxic external medical implant.

Properties of Titanium Nitride

Titanium nitrous oxide is chemically stable at room temperature but can be eroded by hot concentrated acids and oxidized at 800℃. It has infrared reflectance characteristic and the reflectance spectrum is similar to that of gold, so it is yellowish. Depending on the surface finish of different substrate materials and substrates, the relative friction coefficient of titanium nitride is about 0.4-0.9.

Application of Titanium Nitride

Titanium nitride coating is widely used in metal edge to keep the mechanical mold corrosion resistance, since it has metallic luster, commonly used for clothing and car decoration in outer coating, the coating is also used in aerospace and military aspects, as well as the protection of bicycle and motorcycle suspension sliding surface, and even remote control toy car suspension shaft. Because the material is non-toxic and conforms to FDA regulations, it is also commonly used in medical devices, such as maintaining sharpness at the edges of scalpel blades and orthopedic bone saws, or directly as implants and other medical implants.
