What Is Scandium Oxide Powder

Scandium oxide is one of the more important products in scandium products. Its physical and chemical properties are similar to those of rare earth oxides, so the production methods are also very similar. Under certain external conditions, Sc2O3 can produce products of metal scandium salts and various scandium alloys. Some characteristics of scandium oxide make it widely used in the fields of aluminum alloy, electric light source, laser, catalyst, activator, ceramics and aerospace, so the development prospect is very broad.


Scandium Resources in Nature

It is understood that there are about 800 scandium-containing minerals in nature, and there are few independent scandium minerals, mainly because of the symbiosis with other minerals. There are many scandium-containing minerals, such as bauxite, phosphorite, wolframite, ilmenite, rare earth ore, vanadium-titanium magnetite, rare earth iron ore, manganese-depleted ore and tin ore, among them bauxite and phosphorus the mine contains the most scandium.

Raw Materials for the Production of Scandium Oxide Powder

The raw materials used in the production of scandium oxide are mainly scandium-containing waste liquid, waste residue and soot in metallurgy, as well as scandium concentrate obtained after beneficiation of vanadium-titanium magnetite.


1. Scandium-containing waste (mainly waste residue after tungsten extraction). The wolframite (original ore contains scandium oxide 0.05%). After the extraction of tungsten, the waste residue contains scandium oxide 150~600 g/t. After pretreatment, the waste residue is dissolved in hydrochloric acid, and the resulting ScCl3 solution is used as the raw material for the extraction of scandium oxide.


2. Scandium-containing waste liquid (mainly the solution after extraction of titanium from ilmenite). The mother liquor of ilmenite after the production of titanium dioxide by the sulfuric acid method contains scandium oxide 10-15g/m3 as the raw material for extracting scandium oxide.


3. Scandium-containing soot (mainly soot after chlorination of sponge titanium). After pretreatment of soot, acid-dissolved scandium-containing material liquid is prepared as raw material for extraction of scandium oxide.


4. Scandium concentrate (mainly scandium concentrate from vanadium-titanium magnetite beneficiation). The vanadium-titanium magnetite contains Sc 27g/t, and the scandium concentrate obtained after beneficiation contains Sc 112-114g/t. The scandium concentrate is dissolved in hydrochloric acid to obtain a ScCl3 solution, which is used as a raw material for extracting scandium oxide.
