Most solar panels are made of silicon, which is a thoroughly tested semiconductor material but also has limitations. For example, silicon loses up to 40% of the energy collected from sunlight in the form of thermal waste. Researchers at Colorado State University are studying new methods to improve solar power generation and provide more options for the future.

Chemists from Colorado State University propose using a naturally abundant material, molybdenum disulfide, to manufacture solar cells. Researchers have conducted a series of experiments combining photoelectrochemical and spectroscopic techniques, indicating that the fragile molybdenum disulfide film exhibits unprecedented carrier characteristics, which can one day significantly improve solar energy technology.

Austin explained that based on preliminary data on the light absorption capacity of molybdenum sulfide, Sanber's laboratory has shown strong interest in its potential as a substitute for solar energy materials despite its thickness being only three atoms.

A single atomic layer of molybdenum sulfide can be used to create a photoelectrochemical cell, which can then be followed by a pumped probe laser to track the cooling of electrons as they move through the material. They found that the efficiency of light energy conversion was astonishing. More importantly, laser spectroscopy experiments enable them to demonstrate why this effective conversion is possible.

They learned that this material can effectively convert light into energy because its crystal structure allows it to extract and utilize the power of so-called hot charge carriers, which are high-energy electrons that will briefly excite from the ground state when subjected to sufficient impact—visible light. Researchers have found that in their photoelectrochemical cells, the energy from these hot carriers is immediately converted into photocurrent rather than heat loss, which gives them an advantage over traditional silicon solar cells. Molybdenum disulfide is a two-dimensional layered nanomaterial with unique electronic and electrochemical properties, which has been extensively used in multiple fields due to its excellent performance.

The application of molybdenum disulfide

Lubricant: Molybdenum disulfide powder is an efficient solid lubricant that can form a lubricating film at the friction interface, reduce friction coefficient, and reduce wear. It is widely used in lubricants, oils, coatings, and films to enhance lubrication performance.
