What is Magnesium stearate?
Magnesium stearate, with chemical formula C36H70MgO4 and molecular weight of 591.24, is an organic compound. It is a fine white powder with no sand, and it feels greasy when it comes into contact with the skin. Insoluble in water, ethanol, or ether, mainly used as a lubricant, anti-sticking agent, and glidant.
It is especially suitable for the granulation of oil and extracts drugs, and the prepared granules have good fluidity and compressibility. Used as a flow aid in direct compression. It can also be used as a filter aid, clarifier, and defoamer, as well as suspending agents and thickeners of a liquid preparation.
Production technology of Magnesium stearate powder
1. Preparation of sodium stearate: dissolve 4.25 parts of sodium hydroxide in 50 parts of
water, and raise the temperature to 85 for later use. Twenty-five parts of stearic acid are put into a reaction kettle, 500 parts of water are heated and dissolved under stirring, and the temperature is adjusted to 85-90. The prepared sodium hydroxide solution is slowly added into the stearic acid aqueous solution under stirring, the temperature is kept at 75-80, and the reaction is completed under stirring. The product sodium stearate solution is kept warm for later use.
2. Preparation of magnesium stearate: Dissolve 15 parts of magnesium sulfate in 150 parts of water, raise the temperature to 55, slowly add it into the prepared sodium stearate solution, and carry out a double decomposition reaction under stirring, and the magnesium stearate produced by the reaction precipitates out as a solid. After the reaction is finished, the clear liquid is separated by standing, then washed with water, centrifuged, and dried at 80-85 to obtain the finished product.
3. Neutralize 46.6g stearic acid with 164mL of 1mol/L sodium hydroxide solution to obtain 50g sodium stearate in 2L water. The prepared sodium stearate solution was heated to 80, and the solution prepared by dissolving 20g of magnesium chloride in 100mL of water was added dropwise. After continuous stirring, a white precipitate quickly precipitated. Cooling, filtering, washing with water until there is no chloride ion, and finally, washing with ethanol. 10g of the product was placed in a vacuum dryer with concentrated sulfuric acid for four weeks, and the product Mg (C18H35o2) 2 2h2o was obtained. The remaining product was dissolved in benzene and heated under reflux for 20min. The upper yellow liquid layer was poured out while it was hot and evaporated to dryness. The obtained solid could be recrystallized with benzene to obtain the product Mg(C18H35O2)2.

This product is used as a heat stabilizer of PVC, as well as a raw material (excipient and lubricant) for cosmetic flour, emollient ointment, and pharmaceutical tablets; Used in correcting wood flour to make it lubricated, bright, and transparent; Paint industry as a transparent flatting agent, etc.
2. Widely used in food, medicine, coatings, plastics, rubber, textiles, etc.
3. It is a new pharmaceutical adjuvant, which can be used as a film-forming coating material for solid preparations, thickener, and suspension for colloidal liquid preparations, etc.
