Distribution of Boron in Nature

In nature, boron exists mainly in the form of boric acid (H3BO3) and borates.

Boric acid is commonly found in lakes, oceans, and soils. At the bottom of lakes and rivers, borates are combined with other minerals such as borax and boraxite. These compounds can form in hydrothermal vents and salt lakes.

Borosilicate is a mineral that contains a large amount of boron and other elements. This mineral is commonly found in rocks and minerals, including marble, granite, gneiss, and sandstone. During processing, these minerals can release chemicals containing boron.

Boron is both beneficial and harmful to the human body. The human body can promote growth by taking an appropriate amount of boron, which helps maintain the health of bones and teeth and enhances the body's resistance to viruses. However, excessive intake of boron may be harmful to the human body. Long-term excessive intake of boron may affect the human reproductive, developmental, and endocrine systems, causing symptoms such as dizziness, headache, loss of appetite, indigestion, and weight loss, and may even lead to acute poisoning, with vomiting, diarrhea, shock, coma, and other serious poisoning manifestations.

Boron participates in the movement and metabolism of sugar in plants and promotes plant growth and development. Boron deficiency can hinder plant growth. Symptoms include hindered root tip elongation, thickened cortex, hindered lateral root and branch formation, flower drops of kidney beans, small and deformed cabbage leaves, and spirally twisted new branches of peach trees.

Boron also helps improve plant stress resistance, such as drought resistance, disease resistance, and low-temperature resistance. It should be noted that although boron is an essential trace element for plants, excessive intake can also be toxic to plants.

Commonly used detection methods for boron

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS): These methods use a mass spectrometer to analyze boron ions in a sample to measure the boron content quantitatively. This is a highly sensitive and accurate boron detection method. It uses inductively coupled plasma to convert boron ions in a sample into ionic states and then determines the mass of the boron ions by a mass spectrometer. Due to the high resolution, high selectivity, and high sensitivity of ICP-MS technology, it has been widely used in trace analysis of boron.

Colorimetric method: Boron can be detected by combining with appropriate reagents to form colored products through colorimetric reactions. For example, boron can react with vanillin potassium bromide solution to form a blue complex, which can be used to detect the presence and concentration of boron. This method is simple to operate, has high accuracy, and is suitable for the detection of boron content in various samples.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) method: Nuclear magnetic resonance technology can be used to detect the presence of boron and determine its structure. The 13C NMR and 11B NMR spectra of boron can provide information about the chemical environment and structure of boron compounds.

Fluorescence method: Boron can be combined with fluorescent reagents and emit a specific fluorescent signal. By detecting the effect of boron on fluorescence, the presence and concentration of boron can be determined.

Atomic absorption spectroscopy: Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) is a commonly used elemental analysis technique that can also be used for boron detection. This method uses the absorption of light by boron at a specific wavelength to measure the boron content.
