What is alumina?
 
Alumina, chemical formula Al2O3. It is a high hardness compound with a melting point of 2054 ° C and a boiling point of 2980 ° C. Ionized ionic crystals at high temperatures are commonly used in the manufacture of refractory materials.

Industrial alumina is prepared from bauxite (Al2O3·3H2O) and diaspore. For high purity Al2O3, it is generally prepared by chemical methods. Al2O3 has many isomorphous crystals, and there are currently more than 10 kinds of crystals, mainly three kinds of crystal forms, namely α-Al2O3, β-Al2O3, and γ-Al2O3. Among them, the structure has different properties, and is almost completely converted into α-Al2O3 at a high temperature of 1300 ° C or higher.

The pilot project of rare earth modified high purity sapphire raw materials independently researched and developed by the R&D team of School of Materials Science and Engineering of Shanghai Jiaotong University was officially put into operation. The production line produced 5N (purity greater than 99.999%) high purity alumina products for the first time. High-purity alumina is the high-end product of the aluminum industry and the main raw material of artificial sapphire. The new project has made up for the blank of the international rare earth high-purity aluminum preparation technology, and will also make the high-purity aluminum industrial chain and the artificial sapphire industrial chain realize the whole line.

The R&D team has the first ultra-high-purity aluminum purification process and equipment with complete independent intellectual property rights in China. Professor Zhang Wei, the team leader, said that the new technology perfectly combines the high-purity alumina purification process with the rare earth new material preparation technology. After the addition of rare earth, the product not only has a great improvement in toughness, but also achieves color brightness and hardness. Greatly improved, it is now possible to prepare 6N ultra-high-purity aluminum ingots and carry out large-scale production of 5N ultra-high-purity aluminum ingots, laying a solid foundation for mass production of ultra-high purity alumina raw materials in China.
It is understood that high-purity alumina prepared by high-purity aluminum hydrolysis with a purity of more than 5N is the main raw material for producing sapphire single-chip LED substrates. More than 90% of LED companies worldwide use sapphire as a substrate material. In addition, high-purity alumina is also widely used in lithium battery separator materials, high-end phosphors, catalysts, semiconductor ceramics and the like.
