Boron nitride is a crystal composed of nitrogen atoms and boron atoms. The crystal structure is divided into hexagonal boron nitride (HBN), closely packed hexagonal boron nitride (WBN) and cubic boron nitride.
 
The crystal structure of hexagonal boron nitride has a similar graphite layered structure, showing a loose, lubricating, moisture-absorbing, light and other properties of white powder, so it is also called "white graphite". Theoretical density 2.27g/cm3, specific gravity: 2.43, Mohr hardness = 2.
Hexagonal boron nitride has good electrical insulation, thermal conductivity, chemical stability, no obvious melting point, 3000 ℃ in 0.1MPA nitrogen, heat resistance to 2000 ℃ in neutral reduction atmosphere, 2800 ℃ in nitrogen and argon, poor stability in oxygen atmosphere, and temperature below 1000 ℃. The expansion coefficient of hexagonal boron nitride is equivalent to that of quartz, but its thermal conductivity is ten times that of quartz.
Hexagonal boron nitride does not dissolve cold water. When the water is boiled, it hydrolyses very slowly and produces a small amount of boric acid and ammonia, which does not react with weak acid and strong base at room temperature. It is slightly soluble in hot acid and can only be decomposed with molten sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide.
 

Boron Nitride Properties
1. High heat resistance: sublimation at 3000 ℃, its strength at 1800 ℃ is twice that at room temperature, air-cooled at 1500 ℃ to room temperature for dozens of times, and does not soften at 2800 ℃ in inert gas.
2. High thermal conductivity: the hot-pressed products are the same as pure iron, and 33W/M.K has the highest thermal conductivity among ceramic materials above 530C.
3, low thermal expansion coefficient: the expansion coefficient of 2 × 10-6 is second only to quartz glass, which is the smallest in ceramics, coupled with its high thermal conductivity, so the thermal shock resistance is very good.
4. Excellent electrical properties: good insulation at high temperature, 1014 Ω-cm,2000 at 25 ℃ and 103 Ω-cm at 25 ℃. It is the best high temperature insulating material in ceramics, with breakdown voltage 3KV/MV, low dielectric loss 108HZ 2.5 × 10-4, dielectric constant 4, transparent to microwave and infrared.
5. Good corrosion resistance: it does not react with general metals (iron, copper, aluminum, lead, etc.), rare earth metals, precious metals, semiconductor materials (germanium, silicon, potassium arsenide), glass, molten salts (crystal, fluoride, slag), inorganic acid and alkali.
6. Low friction coefficient: U is 0.16, does not increase at high temperature, is more resistant to high temperature than molybdenum disulfide and graphite, oxidation atmosphere can be used up to 900C, vacuum can be used at 2000 ℃.
7. High purity good B is high: its impurity content is less than 10PPM, but B content is more than 43.6%.
8. Machinability: its hardness is Morse 2, so it can be processed into parts with high precision by general machining methods.
 

What is hexagonal boron nitride used in?
Hexagonal boron nitride can be used in the manufacture of TiB2/BN composite ceramics, advanced refractories and superhard materials, separation rings of horizontal continuous rolling steel, high temperature resistant lubricants and high temperature coatings, as well as raw materials for the synthesis of cubic boron nitride.
 
Specific uses:
1. Boron nitride is a mold release agent for metal forming and a lubricant for metal wire drawing.
2. Special electrolysis and resistance materials of boron nitride at high temperature.
3. Boron nitride is suitable for high temperature solid lubricants, extrusion antiwear additives, ceramic composite additives, refractories and antioxidant additives, especially for molten metal Faustian occasions, heat enhancement additives and high temperature resistant insulation materials.
4. Boron nitride is suitable for heat-sealed desiccant of transistor and additive of polymer such as plastic resin.

7. With the participation of catalyst, cubic boron nitride can be transformed into cubic boron nitride as hard as diamond by high temperature and high pressure treatment.
8. Boron nitride is the structural material of atomic reactor.
9. Boron nitride is suitable for the nozzles of aircraft and rocket engines.
10. Boron nitride is an insulator of high voltage, high frequency electricity and plasma arc.
11. Boron nitride is a packaging material to prevent neutron radiation.
12. The superhard material made from boron nitride can be made into high-speed cutting tools and drills for geological exploration and oil drilling.
13. Boron nitride is used in metallurgy for separation ring of continuous casting steel, flow groove of amorphous iron, demoulding agent of continuous casting aluminum (various optical glass stripping agents).
14.Boron nitride is an evaporator for all kinds of capacitor film plating, picture tube plating, display plating.
15. Boron nitride is suitable for all kinds of fresh-keeping aluminized bags and so on.
16. Boron nitride is a variety of laser anti-counterfeiting aluminum plating, trademark gilding materials, all kinds of cigarette labels, beer labels, packaging boxes, cigarette boxes.
