What is Bi2S3?
Bismuth sulfide is a V–VI compound semiconductor with a direct band gap of 1.3 eV. It can be a promising photoelectric conducting material in light-emitting diodes and voltmeters. Many meaningful researches have been devoted to studying the nanostructure and properties of Bi2S3 with different morphologies. The solvothermal method is one of the most useful chemical methods for synthesizing Bi2S3, by which organometallic or toxic precursors are not required, and the reactions can be carried out at relatively low temperatures. Much attention has been focused on low dimension nanostructure of semiconductors during the past years owing to their fundamental significance in investigating the dependence of various physical properties on dimensionally and size reduction as well as their potential applications in the fabrication of electronic, optoelectronic, electrochemical, and electromechanical devices with nanoscale dimension. In this paper, novel cauliflower-like Bi2S3 products were prepared successfully in DMF via solvothermal process using bismuth nitrate and thioacetamide as precursors in the presence of surfactant of SUDEI: 0.194 g (0.4 mmol) Bi(NO3)35H2O, 0.045 g (0.6 mmol) TAA and an appropriate amount of SUDEI were mixed in DMF in a 50 mL Teflon-liner autoclave, and the autoclave was filled with DMF up to 80% of its capacity. The obtained black precipitates were collected carefully and washed with ethanol and distilled water several times.
 

Preparation of cauliflower-like bismuth sulfide and its application in electrochemical sensor
Cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry were performed on a CHI 832 electrochemical analysis system (CHI Instrument, China) with a conventional three-electrode electrochemical cell using bare Au, chitosan modified Au (CHT/Au) or Bi2S3–chitosan hydride modified Au (denoted as cBi2S3–CHT/Au and rBi2S3–CHT/Au for cauliflower-like and rod-like Bi2S3, respectively) electrode as the working electrode. The modification solution of Bi2S3–chitosan hydride was prepared according to the following procedure: 1.0 mg Bi2S3 powder was added into 5 mL 2% HAc containing 1.0 mg chitosan and then ultrasonicate for 5 min until a well-proportioned Bi2S3–CHT mixture was obtained. The modified electrodes were prepared through the conventional coating method.

In addition, the rod-like Bi2S3 was also used as a modification material to study the effect of morphologies on the sensing properties. The difference of peak potentials of DA and AA decreased obviously, and the oxidation peak corresponding to the DA oxidation on rBi2S3–CHT/Au (curve b) was much smaller than that on cBi2S3–CHT/Au (curve a) in cyclic voltammograms, and this result could be more clearly found in differential pulse voltammograms. These demonstrated that the nano-sized Bi2S3 particles with different morphologies have significant differences in sensing properties for the simultaneous determination of DA or AA. The better sensing ability of cauliflower-like Bi2S3 than the rod-like might be attributed to its porous/spacing structure and large surface area of cauliflower-like Bi2S3.
