What is hafnium carbide?
Hafnium carbide powder is usually synthesized by a reaction between carbon and some source of hafnium, such as pure hafnium (Hf), metal hydride (HfH2), or metal oxide (HfO2). HfO2 is considered the most suitable raw material for HfC synthesis as it is much cheaper and thermodynamically more stable than Hf and HfH2. The carbothermal reduction method is based on reaction.HfO2+3C=HfC+2CO. Even though the formation of the final product is more complex than Eq. (1), this procedure offers the possibility of an economical production route. Therefore, studies on low-temperature synthesis and low-cost precursors are among the main emphases of ongoing research efforts. This paper studied the possibility of manufacturing HfC powder using hafnium chloride (HfCl4) and citric acid as a source of hafnium and carbon, respectively. According to the author's knowledge, no work about synthesizing HfC from these precursors has yet been performed.
 

Low-temperature Rapid Synthesis of Ultrafine Hafnium Carbide Ceramic Powders
Nano hafnium carbide (HfC) powders were synthesized by sol-gel combining a high-temperature rapid heat treatment process using citric acid and hafnium tetrachloride as the raw materials. The influence of ball milling treatment on the phase and morphology of pyrolysis products (HfO2-C) and final HfC product were investigated, and the influences of heat treatment temperature and holding time on the structure and properties of the synthesized hafnium carbide powders were also studied. The experimental results showed that the HfO2-C powders with good uniformity and small particle size were prepared by controlling the milling time. Pure HfC powders with an average particle size of 500 nm were obtained at 1 700 °C with a holding time of 3 min, and the oxygen content was about 0.69wt%, lower than that of the hafnium carbide powders prepared by SPS (0.97%).

Hafnium carbide powder was synthesized by polycondensation of hafnium chloride under citric acid. The starting materials were dissolved in water or mixed homogeneously until a composite gel was formed. Pyrolysis of the obtained gel resulted in the formation of monoclinic hafnia and amorphous carbon. Materials were analyzed utilizing X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy investigations. The cause showed that the obtained carbide powder comprised nearly equiaxed particles of narrow size distribution. The obtained hafnium carbide powder was densified via spark plasma sintering at 1950 C using molybdenum silicide as a sintering additive. The microstructure and mechanical properties of obtained hafnium carbide ceramics were investigated.
