What is Nano Silicon Powder?
Silicon nanopowder refers to silicon particles of nanometer size. Nano silicon powder has the characteristics of high purity, small particle size, and uniform distribution. Silicon nanopowder have a large surface area, high surface activity, and low loose packing density; the product is non-toxic, odorless. Nano silicon powder is a new generation of optoelectronic semiconductor materials, with a wide gap energy semiconductor, but also high power light source material.
Nano Silicon Powder Preparation Methods
Currently, the main methods for the preparation of nano silicon powder are mechanical ball milling synthesis, chemical vapor deposition, and plasma evaporation condensation.

Mechanical Ball Milling Method
The mechanical ball milling method uses mechanical rotation and the interaction between the particles to produce mechanical grinding pressure and shear force to grind large-size silicon materials into nano-sized powder.
The grinding process requires the addition of grinding aids, which can easily introduce impurities, resulting in lower product purity, irregularly shaped particles, ineffective control of particle size distribution, cumbersome post-processing, and low production efficiency.
Chemical Vapour Deposition
Chemical vapor deposition is a technique for the production of silicon nanopowders using silane (SiH4) as the reaction material.
Depending on the energy source used to induce the pyrolysis of SiH4, it can be divided into plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), laser-induced chemical vapor deposition (LICVD), and fluidized bed method (FBR), of which PECVD and LICVD are currently the leading industrial production technologies for the production of silica nanopowders. The US company DuPont has used the PECVD method to achieve batch production of silica nanopowders in the 1970s.
Plasma evaporation condensation method
This method has been used for the last 10 years as a safe and efficient method for the manufacture of high-purity, ultra-fine, spherical, high-value-added powders. The reaction material is generally vaporized into gaseous atoms and molecules or partially ionized into ions by means of a plasma heat source and condensed into a solid powder by means of a rapid condensation technique. The method prepares nano silicon powders with high purity, controlled particle size, and high production efficiency.
Comparison of several major methods of preparing silicon nanopowders:
The traditional mechanical ball milling method, which is prone to the introduction of impurities, lower purity, and non-uniform particle size distribution, is unsuitable for the current social demand for high-quality silicon nanopowders;
The chemical vapor deposition method uses flammable and explosive silane as the reaction raw material to produce flammable and explosive hydrogen gas, which poses safety risks in terms of storage and use, and the method can only be generated in batches with low production efficiency
The plasma evaporation and condensation method has the advantages of controlled particle size, high purity, safety and reliability, and continuous preparation, which is suitable for the current emerging field of high-quality demand for silicon nanopowder.
