How to produce sodium silicate?
1. Sodium silicate Dry production
Dry production means that silica powder and soda ash are mixed proportionately and sent into a reverberatory furnace or an electric furnace for high-temperature melting to obtain sodium silicate products. Specific steps are as follows:
1. Grind silica powder into fine powder, and remove impurities like iron, aluminum, etc.
2. Grind soda ash into fine powder and mix it with silica powder in a certain proportion.
3. Put the mixture into the reverberatory or electric furnace, and melt it at a high temperature.
4. Cool the melt to obtain the sodium silicate product.
The benefit of dry production of sodium silicate lies in the fact that it is easy to do and no additional facilities like water treatment or waste acid recovery are needed for the production process, and the production price is very low. However, the drawback to dry production is the high energy consumption. It also is simple to generate an enormous amount of waste gas and leftovers, which have an environmental impact.
2.Sodium silicate Wet production
Wet production refers to the reaction of quartz sand with NaOH solution to obtain sodium solution containing silicic acid, and then through the steps of concentration, crystallization, dehydration, or acidification to obtain sodium silicate products. Specific steps are as follows:
1. Mix quartz sand with NaOH solution to react.
2. a sodium solution containing silicic acid is obtained after the reaction solution is filtered.
3. Concentrate the sodium solution to remove the water in it.
4. Put the concentrated solution into the crystallizer for crystallization.
5. Dehydrating or acidifying the crystallized crystals to obtain sodium silicate products.
The advantages of wet sodium silicate production are low energy consumption, recyclable by-product Na2CO3, and less environmental impact. However, the disadvantage of wet production is that the process is complicated, a large amount of water and chemical reagents are required, and more wastewater and waste acid are generated, which requires special treatment facilities.
A1: While generally safe, sodium silicate can cause skin and eye irritation. It is important to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves and goggles, when handling the powder.
A2: Sodium silicate should be stored in a cool, dry place away from moisture. While it can have a long shelf life, it is best to check the manufacturer's recommendations for storage and expiry dates.
A3: Powdered instant sodium silicate offers the convenience of easy mixing and storage compared to liquid forms. Liquid sodium silicate is already in solution form but may require special handling and storage conditions.
A4: Sodium silicate is generally considered environmentally friendly, but its disposal should follow local regulations. Ensure proper disposal methods are followed to minimize environmental impact.
A5: While sodium silicate has some food-grade applications, the powdered form is not typically used directly in food products. It may be used in food packaging or processing equipment as a cleaning agent.
A6: When used as a concrete sealer, powdered instant sodium silicate penetrates the surface of the concrete, reacts with the minerals present, and forms a gel-like substance that seals pores and cracks, improving durability and resistance to weathering.
